Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS - Chad Woollard's second goal of the night with only 1:09 remaining in a tie hockey game helped propel Mississippi to a 4-2 victory over Bossier-Shreveport on Saturday night in Southaven , ending the Mudbugs four game win streak.
Woollard broke the tie with his seventh goal of the season and the Ryan Held capped it off with an empty net goal to seal the win for the RiverKings, who advance to 9-3 while Bossier-Shreveport falls to 4-6-1.
For the fifth consecutive meeting between Mississippi and Bossier-Shreveport, the game was scoreless after one period of play. The Mudbugs had three power plays and Mississippi had one, but neither team generated too many quality scoring chances.
There wasn't much even strength hockey in the second period of play, as both teams had a few man-advantage opportunities. The Mudbugs would strike first with a power play goal from Brett Smith. Just after Mississippi had cleared the defensive zone, Jake Ortmeyer put the back right back in for Chris Brassard, who faked a slapshot and fed the puck to Smith, who was wide open for the one-timer and a 1-0 lead.
Mississippi would get even though on a 4-on-3 power play goal that finally ended the Mudbugs league-record shutout streak at 218:57. Chad Woollard fired a wrist shot from the circle that found the top shelf and tied the game at one. Ironically, Woollard was the last player to score a goal against the Mudbugs before the start of their record-setting streak back on November 3rd.
Before the period was out though, Bossier-Shreveport would regain the lead with some good work at even strength. Daniel Pegoraro drove the defenseman wide and dished the puck out front for a waiting Joe Ori, who netted his team high seventh goal of the season for a 2-1 âBugs lead after two.
In the third period, another power play goal put Mississippi back on top. After a great save by Ken Carroll, Ryan Held picked up the rebound of a Ryan Campbell shot and buried it two tie the game at two. Then, the RiverKings would take the lead on Woollard's second of the night, a wrister from right between the circles as he found himself wide open in front of Carroll for his seventh tally this year. Held's empty netter would finish off the 4-2 win.
Bossier-Shreveport was outshot 38-30 for the game, and finished just 1-for-12 on the power play, while Mississippi converted 2-of-8 man advantages. The Mudbugs are now 2-4 this year against Mississippi , and the two teams will not meet again until January 5th, 2008.
Up next for Bossier-Shreveport is a home game against another Southern Conference team, the Corpus Christi Rayz. The Mudbugs and the Rayz will drop the puck at 7:05 on Tuesday evening at the CenturyTel Center for their first meeting of the season. Call 318-752-BUGS (2847) for tickets to Tuesday's game.
