Rocky Mountain Rage News Release
Broomfield, Colo. - The Rocky Mountain Rage defeated the visiting Wichita Thunder tonight 5-1 at the Broomfield Event Center in their first meeting this season. The Rage remains unbeaten in regulation at home this season for an eighth straight game. The Rage were dressed in special camouflage jerseys as military personnel were welcomed and honored at tonight's game.
The Rage improved to 9-1-1 (19 points) for first place in the Northwest Division. The Thunder fell to 2-6-0 (4 points) for fifth place in the Northwest Division.
Much like Friday night, both teams found themselves in a defensive battle in the first period. Rage goaltender Terry Dunbar put up nine saves in the first keeping the Thunder scoreless, while Wichita goaltender Jon Horrell stopped all 12 shots by Rocky Mountain in the period.
But unlike Friday night, Wichita broke the scoreless tie in the second period. Dunbar was screened out front and Wichita's Dominic DAmour made a pass from behind the net to Alex Goupil who scored at 5:49. Rocky Mountain did not give Wichita the lead for very long. The Rage answered back at 12:36 with a goal by center David Morelli from the right circle on the powerplay to tie the game.
In the third period, Rocky Mountain's Colt King and Simon Watson produced back-to-back goals separated by just 12 seconds. Horrell found himself displaced from the net during both goals. At 7:54, Rocky Mountain highest scoring defenseman Tyler Butler fired a wrist shot from just inside the blueline. It tipped over the right pad of Horrell and in net to give the Rage a 4-1 lead on the powerplay. Rage winger Scott Wray assisted on all three goals making him the lone scoring leader in the Central Hockey League with 28 points in 11 games this season.
At a timeout in the last half of the second period, fans and players from both teams stop to give a standing ovation to the military men and women in the arena.
Back to the game, Rage left winger Trevor Weisgerber capped the scoring at 15:06 with a top shelf goal from Butler and Brent Cullaton, for his second assist of the night.
The Rage returns to action Nov. 21 when they travel to Loveland to play the Colorado Eagles for the first time on Eagles home ice this season. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m. Rage fans not in attendance can also listen in to the game live on ESPN Radio AM 1600 starting at 6:55 p.m.
