Gorillas Beat Dogs in Overtime

Amarillo, TX -The Amarillo Gorillas beat the Arizona Sundogs on Saturday night, 3-2 in overtime, despite giving up a 2 goal lead in the third period. Amarillo's Chris Lipsett would score the game winner, his 19th of the season, at 3:10 of the overtime period to give the Gorillas their tenth win of the season and first of 2008.

The Gorillas would jump to a 2-0 lead after Austin Sutter opened the scoring at 9:09 of period two, and he added another at 17:29 giving him seven goals on the season. The Sundogs would come storming back in the third period however, led by their leading scorer Alex Leavitt. Leavitt would convert two Tyler Redenbach passes 1:37 apart to tie the game up late in period number three. The first goal came at 13:06 as Leavitt scored on the power-play, and the game-tying goal was scored at 14:43.

In the extra session, Amarillo would have a 4 on 3 power-play to begin the period, but they could not take advantage. The Gorillas celebration would begin at 3:10 when Chris Lipsett scored off a feed from Shaun Arvai whose pass came across the crease from left to right, and Lipsett was able to pop the puck over Sundogs goalie Bill Zaniboni.

In net for Amarillo was Dan McWhinney who made 44 saves on the 46 shots that he faced, earning his sixth win of the season as the Gorillas held the league's top rated power play to one for eight. Amarillo would also go one for eight on the power-play, and snapped out of a brief three game losing streak. Arizona has now lost five games in a row.

The Gorillas will head back to Broomfield, CO next week to take on the Rocky Mountain Rage on Wednesday, January 9th before heading home for a season long four game home stand. Next weekend the Gorillas will host Corpus Christi on Friday night and Odessa on Saturday night.
