New Mexico Scorpions News Release

[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-Chris Robertson thrilled the crowd at the 4:09 mark of overtime with a game winning goal. The win put the Scorpions three games over .500 at 15-12-4.

The Scorpions wanted to get out to a quick start and they did just that with a pair of rookies. David Simoes started a rush out of his own zone and down the ice. He found Mitch Stephens in the slot and delivered a perfect pass. Stephens' snap shot found the back of the net giving the Scorpions the late first period goal.

After a scoreless second period, the third period saw the Jackalopes tie the game early on. Mario Joly's shot from the high slot beat the glove of goalie Andrew Martin at the 5:00 mark. It would be the only blemish on Martin's 34 save performance.

Next week the Scorpions make a swing through South Texas against Corpus Christi, Austin and Rio Grande Valley. Wednesday's game against the Rayz can be heard on 1050 KTBL starting at 5:50 p.m. and seen for free on the CHL Network.

New Mexico then returns home for a pair of weekend games starting on Friday, January 18th. When the Scorpions take the ice versus Odessa, they will wear specialty jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game to benefit the American Cancer Society. On Saturday, January 19th the Special Olympics will be recognized when the Scorpions host Wichita. Prior to the game, the New Mexico Ice Holes will play the Media at 4 p.m. to benefit New Mexico Special Olympics.
