Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs and the Amarillo Gorillas faced off Saturday night at the Amarillo Civic Center in Amarillo, Texas. The Sundogs came into Saturday night's game looking to snap a season-high four-game winless streak. Down 2-0 after the opening period, Arizona would fight back to force an overtime session but fell short in their comeback effort to drop their fifth straight, 3-2.
The Sundogs went down 2-0 in the opening period as Austin Sutter grabbed his sixth and seventh goals on the season to give his club an early advantage. His first tally came at the 9:09 mark on a powerplay following a Karl Sellan goalie interference call. With less than three minutes remaining in the first, Sutter collected his second of the period on a pass from Bill Vandermeer.
At 13:06 of the middle frame, forward Alex Leavitt cut the Gorillas' lead back to one on a pass from Tyler Redenbach. The Edmonton, Alberta native notched his second of the game and his 25th of the year 97 seconds later, again from Redenbach, to tie the game at two goals apiece.
Neither team was able to beat the opposing goaltender in the third period, forcing the overtime session. At 3:10 of the overtime period, winger Chris Lipsett found the back of the net past netminder Bill Zaniboni to give his club the 3-2 overtime win. Shaun Arvai assisted on the play for his 16th helper of the season.
Bill Zaniboni was in net for the Sundogs and stopped 33 of 36 shots in the loss, while Dan McWhinney appeared in net for Amarillo and blocked 44 of 46 shots for his sixth win of the season. Arizona finished 1-for-7 with the man advantage while Amarillo finished 1-for-8 on the powerplay. With the overtime loss, the Sundogs fall to 19-9-3 on the season and remain in second place in the Southwest Division, two points back of division leader, the Odessa Jackalopes.
The Sundogs now travel to Hidalgo, Texas to take on the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees on Tuesday, Jan. 8. The game is set for 6:35pm (Arizona time) but will be tape delayed until 7:00pm on 96.7 FM The Wolf, the Official Broadcast Home of the Arizona Sundogs.
