Tri-City Storm News Release
Kearney, Ne. - The Tri-City Storm took two of three weekly honors from the USHL in week seven of the regular season; defenseman Mattias Goransson has been named CCM Defenseman of the Week, while forward Carson Meyer has been honored as the CCM Forward of the Week.
Both players had a league-best five points this weekend. Goransson had two goals and three assists to boost to 13 points this season, the most by a USHL defenseman. Meyer led the league with three goals in week seven and is second in the league with nine goals.
Tri-City scored six power-play goals this weekend; Goransson was on ice for all six, picking up two goals and two assists. Meyer was on ice for five of the six power-play goals, notching three man-up points; two goals and one assist.
"Our power play really helped us excel this weekend and I'm happy for both players," said Head Coach and General Manager Bill Muckalt.
For Goransson, this is his second USHL Defenseman of the Week honor this season.
Called the Storm's "Rock of Gibraltar" by Head Coach Bill Muckalt, Goransson's production has been as much about points as his presence on the ice. This weekend, he was on the ice for seven of eight Storm goals. Over the last six games, Tri-City has scored 18 goals; Goransson has been on the ice for 15 of those tallies, accumulating five goals and ten points.
This season, the Storm has scored 35 goals; Goransson has been on ice for 23 of the Storm's tallies, or 65.7% of Tri-City's goals. He has only been on the ice ten times when the Storm has allowed goals, all at even strength, including three empty-netters.
Paired together throughout the season with John Marino, the duo is the highest-scoring defensive combo in the USHL, combining for 23 points in 13 games.
Goransson has seven power-play points this season, tied for best in the league.
"Mattias leads by example and logs a lot of minutes," said Muckalt. "He is calming presence."
Meyer is third in league with 15 points after his five-point weekend. The 5-foot-9, 167-lb. forward is tied with Goransson for a team-best plus-5 rating.
He has four multi-point games in his last six contests, accumulating ten points over that span. The native of Powell, OH has only been off the board once in seven games and has points in ten of Tri-City's 13 games.
"It's clear Carson has an ability to finish and score," said Muckalt.
Meyer is in his first year in the USHL after leading the T1EHL's Ohio Blue Jackets in assists (30) and points (51) in 2014-15. After playing two games for Tri-City as an affiliate player last season, this is Meyer's first full USHL season. He committed to Miami of Ohio on Oct. 19.
Goransson had seven goals and 28 points last season with Tri-City and is the Storm's leading returning blueline scorer. The native of Grums, Sweden is committed to UMass-Lowell.
Tri-City has 22 college commits on its 25-man roster, the highest percentage of college commits on any USHL club.
