Tri-City Storm News Release
Kearney, Ne. - The Tri-City Storm's offense scored twice in the opening minutes of the third, breaking a tie to hurl it, 4-1, by the Sioux City Musketeers Tuesday at the Viaero Center.
With the game even at one entering the third, Wade Allison continued his torrent pace by deking to the left post and backhanding a shot by Cam Gornet just 49 seconds into the final frame. Allison has four goals and ten points over his five-game point streak.
Jake Wahlin scored the final two goals for the Storm, joining Allison (1g, 1a), Nico Sturm (1g, 1a), Mattias Goransson (2a) and John Marino (2a) as Tri-City's multi-point scorers.
Goransson's assists give him 62 career points, the highest scoring defenseman in Storm history.
As the offense zoomed, Dayton Rasmussen was steady in victory, making 31 saves and earning his first career assist. Gornet made 32 stops in defeat.
The Storm never trailed, thanks in part to an early offensive blast. With Musketeers Captain Ryan Zuhlsdorf in the penalty box 1:12 into the game for holding, Tri-City's Sturm needed one shot to break the ice. On the first shot of the game, ten seconds into the man up, Sturm deflected a shot from Goransson in the slot over Gornet's shoulder at 1:22 of the first. John Marino earned the secondary helper on Sturm's 13th of the season.
Goransson's assist, his 61st point in his USHL career, moved the 20-year-old defenseman in front of Chris Nathe for most points by a defenseman in club history. Goransson ranks 28th in Storm career points with 62.
The Storm held an 18-6 shot edge at the end of the first, the most shots Tri-City has attempted in an opening frame in 2015-16.
Sioux City responded by taking 12 second-period shots and limiting the Storm to seven. Trey Dodd bested Dayton Rasmussen for the only goal of the middle frame at 8:18, slipping the puck from the right low circle off Rasmussen's pads.
With the game tied heading into the final frame, Allison scored less than a minute into the third, with assists to Marino and Rasmussen. Allison leads the squad with five game-winning goals. Rasmussen's assist gives Tri-City goalies three helpers this season.
The third-period momentum continued thanks to Wahlin, who scored at 2:26 on the power-play for key insurance. Assisted by Goransson and Sturm, the forward Wahlin shot the puck from the left circle, giving him double-digit goals for the second straight year.
With 3:15 left, Wahlin iced the game on his 11th of the season, poking in a pass from Wade Allison at the right post. Alex Limoges, coming off a career-high four-point effort Saturday against Omaha, took the secondary helper.
