Wausau Woodchucks News Release
A two-out, RBI-single from Wisconsin Woodchucks' designated hitter Jake Scudder in the sixth inning ended up being the difference maker, as the Woodchucks defeated the Battle Creek Bombers, 3-2, Saturday night at C.O. Brown Stadium.
With the Woodchucks (15-8, 33-24) trailing 2-1 entering the frame, center fielder Taylor Kohlwey led off with a single to left center field. With one out, first baseman Brendon Hayden stood in and Kohlwey took second on a wild pitch. Hayden struck out, but reached first when Bombers' backstop Henri Lartigue threw to third on the second wild pitch of the inning, trying to get the lead runner Kohlwey. Lartigue's throw was mishandled by Bombers' third baseman Colby Bortles, which allowed Kohlwey to score the tying run.
With two outs, Hayden advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw from Bombers' All-Star starting pitcher Jacob Waguespack, before Scudder delivered the game-winning hit down the first base line, scoring Hayden and giving Wisconsin the lead for good.
Battle Creek (7-15, 23-34) scored first in the game, as they got a two-out, two-run single off Woodchucks' starting pitcher Robby Medel in the second inning, taking a 2-0 lead. The Chucks cut the deficit in half in the fifth inning, when second baseman Nate Mondou led off and tripled to right center for the Chucks' first hit of the game, and came in to score on shortstop Ryan Howard's RBI-groundout.
Medel, who improved to 3-1 with the win, was superb throughout. In seven innings of work, Medel fired 97 pitches, surrendering just two runs on seven hits, while striking out eight and walking none. Left-hander Tim McElroy worked around a leadoff walk to throw a scoreless eighth inning, while righty Pat Kenney tallied his first save of the year in pitching a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts.
Offensively for Wisconsin, Kohlwey (2-for-4) and Mondou (2-for-3) each tallied multiple-hit efforts, while Scudder's RBI-hit was the game-winner.
The Woodchucks are back in action in Battle Creek against the Bombers on Sunday afternoon in the finale of their four-game road trip. First pitch from C.O. Brown Stadium is scheduled for 4:05 P.M.
