Lancaster Stormers News Release
Former Lancaster Barnstormers shortstop Danny Gonzalez came back to haunt his old ballclub on Saturday evening with a homer and a double to lead the York Revolution to a 3-2 victory over the Barnstormers at Sovereign Bank Stadium.
York climbed back to within six games in the Freedom Division chase.
Lancaster grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second on a long home run to right center by Ryan Harvey, his second of the week and third of the season. It followed a single by Fehlandt Lentini, who had stolen second.
The Barnstormers only managed six singles for the remainder of the evening off five different York hurlers.
John Halama (5-4) kept York at bay through three innings but needed his defense to get through the fourth.
Ramon Castro walked to start the inning and moved to second on Michael Hernandez' single up the middle. With a count of 3-1 to James Shanks, the Revs started their runners, but Shanks missed the pitch, and Francisco Hernandez cut Castro down at third. Shanks ripped the next pitch into left field, but Blake Gailen made a perfect throw to get Hernandez at home as the shutout was preserved.
It did not last much longer. Travis Scott kept the streak of hits going with a leadoff single in the fifth. Gonzalez followed with his opposite field home run, a belt onto the picnic tents above the right field wall.
The next meeting between Halama and Gonzalez did not go well either. The switch hitting shortstop drilled a long double to right center to start the inning. Halama was able to strike out Salvador Paniagua, but Brandon Haveman laced a single into center. York played it conservatively, holding Gonzalez at third. He scored on Scott Grimes' fly ball to medium deep right.
Lancaster put together one final chance. With two outs in the eighth, Lentini chopped a single into left. Harvey drew a walk, bringing up Emerson Frostad. Reliever Adam Thomas worked ahead in the count to 1-2. Frostad responded with a line drive to left, but Shanks raced in to make a shin-high catch for the final out.
R.J. Rodriguez notched his 11th save, issuing only a walk in the ninth. Ricardo Gomez (3-0), yet another Barnstormer from bygone years earned the win.
The two clubs play the rubber game of the three-game series on Sunday at 5:00. Lancaster will send right-hander J.D. Durbin (3-4) to the hill against York ace Corey Thurman (6-1). Fans may tune in to 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com; and the I Heart Radio cell phone app starting at 4:45.
