Frederick Keys News Release
With Keys 2-0 Victory Over Kinston, Orlando Gomez Becomes Winningest Manager in Frederick Keys History
On a beautiful night for baseball in Frederick, MD, the Keys helped their manager Orlando Gomez enter the record books as Frederick blanked the Kinston Indians, 2-0. With the win, Gomez passed Bien Figueroa (2005-06) for the most victories by a manager in Keys history. In two seasons as the skipper in Frederick, Gomez has compiled a record of 148-118 (.556).
The two starting pitchers on Monday night dominated the contest through the first five innings. LHP Jake Pettit got the start for the Keys and he did not surrender a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning. The K-Tribe picked up two hits in the frame but failed to score. Pettit exited his outing after six innings of work. On the night, Pettit allowed three hits and no runs while striking out four and walking one.
Since making his first start with the Keys on July 14th, the Orting, WA native has surrendered just seven earned runs in 45.2 innings pitched (1.38 ERA).
Kinston starter, LHP Francisco Jimenez, was quite impressive on Monday evening as well. In his fifth start of the season, Jimenez tossed six scoreless frames before running into trouble in the seventh. After retiring CF Miguel Abreu, Jimenez surrendered back-to-back doubles to C Brian Ward and DH Justin Dalles. The K-Tribe infield came in as 3B Dale Mollenhauer stepped to the plate with Ward and pinch runner Steve Bumbry both in scoring position. Mollenhauer hit a weak line drive up the middle that snuck through the infield to give the Keys the first run of the game. Following the Mollenhauer RBI single, RHP Trey Haley relieved Jimenez. After Haley struck out RF Bobby Stevens for the second out of the inning, Haley uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Bumbry to score from third.
The two-run lead was plenty for the Keys bullpen. LHP Jason Gurka notched his first Carolina League win on the night after he tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. RHP Randy Henry closed out the victory and picked up his first Carolina League save.
In the losing effort, Francisco Jimenez allowed two runs on five hits over a season-high 6 1/3 innings pitched. Jimenez fell to 3-3 on season in the loss.
Frederick and Kinston will game two of the four-game series on Tuesday night. The Keys will send RHP Scott Copeland (3-0, 0.52) to hill while the K-Tribe will turn to RHP Marty Popham (5-2, 4.62). First pitch from Harry Grove Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
