THE HILLCATS: Monday, the 'Cats were off...Sunday, they beat the Frederick Keys 12-1...Prior to Sunday's game a moment of silence was held in memory of Calvin Falwell, the man who created the Lynchburg Baseball Corp. and brought Carolina League baseball to Lynchburg back in 1966...The Hillcats would go on to pummel the Keys with three runs in the first, three in the second and six in the sixth...Todd Cunningham his hist fourth home run of the season and drove in three,and Andrelton Simmons had three hits, three runs scored and a pair of RBI as well...On the mound, RHP Caleb Brewer held the the Keys scoreless through eight frames to earn the win...The Hillcats are currently in third place in the Northern Division at 25-31, 9.5 games back of the Keys in first place...
VS. MYRTLE BEACH: The Hillcats are 7-10 against the Pelicans this season...This is the last series between the two this year...Lynchburg won the first series in Myrtle Beach 2-1 (May 13-15), it was the only home series the Pelican lost in the first half...In seven prior match-ups at BB&T Coastal Field this year, the 'Cats have been blanked three times, including both ends of a doubleheader July 27...The Hillcats are now affiliated with the Atlanta Braves, the Pelicans 2010 affiliation...Four active players on the Lynchburg roster spent time with Myrtle Beach a year ago...
REMEMBERING MR. BASEBALL: Calvin Falwell, Lynchburg Baseball Corporation's Chairman of the Board, passed away last night at 90 years old...Mr. Falwell brought Carolina League Baseball to Lynchburg in 1966 when he formed and became president of the Lynchburg Baseball Corporation...His many honors in baseball include winning the John H. Johnson President's Trophy in 1998 and being named "King of Baseball" in 2005 at the Baseball Winter Meetings in Dallas, Texas...The field at Lynchburg City Stadium was officially named Calvin Falwell Field in 2004 in his honor...The flag in center field at City Stadium will fly at half-mast for the remainder of the season...
HONORING THAT MEMEMORY: The Hillcats delivered their best home performance of the year Sunday...Beating the Keys 12-1 the 'Cats matched their largest winning margin on the season (11-0 @ KIN, 5/16), and it was the largest seen at home...Twelve runs was the most scored by the Hillcats since putting up 12 in Salem May 31, and again it was the most scored at home this season...Their six-run sixth inning also matched a season-high and the 11 batters that came to the plate in the frame matched their top mark this season as well...
BEST OF THE BRAVOS: Eight members of the Hillcats are ranked amongst the top 30 prospects in the Atlanta Braves organization according to Baseball America...That list includes C Christian Bethancourt (12), SS Andrelton Simmons (15), RHP David Hale (17), RHP Dimasther Delgado (18), OF Todd Cunningham (20), OF Adam Milligan (22), INF Joe Leonard (23) and 2B Phil Gosselin (25)...
EXTRA BASES: OF Geraldo Rodriguez went 1-for-3 Saturday night with solo home run...Over his last 11 games he is hitting .297 (11-for-37) with seven extra base hits, five doubles and two home runs...He has hit safely in nine of those 11 games and is currently on a five-game hitting streak, including a game he entered late Thursday night and went 1-for-1 in his only plate appearance...
SIMMONS SITS ALONE: With Jose Martinez, formerly of the Winston-Salem Dash, falling below the minimum number of plate appearances needed to qualify among the league leaders in the Carolina League over the weekend, Andrelton Simmons now sits atop the leader board as the only batter with an average north of .300...He is hitting .309 after going 3-for-4 Sunday night...He has been the epitome of consistency, not letting his average dip below .290 since the start of May...He's also put together three double-digit hit-streaks...Especially hot in August, he has hit safely in 17 of 19 games, batting .363 (29-for-80), driving in 14 runs, which ties his best monthly mark of the season (14 in May)...He has 12 extra base hits, nine doubles, two triples, and a home run, which is more than he had compiled in any other month this year...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Wilfredo Boscan was signed by the Rangers as a non-drafted free agent on July 10, 2006...Entered the 2010 season rated as the Rangers 27th best prospect by Baseball America...Spent the entire 2010 season with High-A Bakersfield...Was fifth in the league in strikeouts (130)...Started the 2011 season in Double-A Frisco...Went 1-3 with a 6.95 ERA in five starts there...Sent to Myrtle Beach on May 3...Faced Lynchburg three times this season... Took the loss on May 15, pitching six innings and giving up five runs, all earned...Took loss on July 3 after giving up four runs on seven hits in seven innings pitched...Lost on July 25, giving up three runs on seven hits in seven innings pitched...Currently 4-11 with a 4.31 ERA with Myrtle Beach this season...
