Winston-Salem Dash News Release
SALEM, VA (AUGUST 23, 2011) - Three early runs proved to be enough for the Red Sox as Salem edged the Dash 3-2 on Tuesday night at LewisGale Field. Winston-Salem fell to 1.5 games behind Kinston for first place in the Southern Division after the Indians beat Frederick 3-1 in Maryland.
The Red Sox (26-32, 57-70) struck early against Dash starter Cameron Bayne. Heiker Meneses singled and moved to second on a walk to Kolbrin Vitek. Bryce Brentz broke the ice with an RBI single to left-center field and then Vitek came home to score on a fielder's choice off Jorge Padron's bat.
Salem made it 3-0 in the second inning with a two-out rally against Bayne. Number nine batter Josue Peley walked and stole second base before being driven in by Derrik Gibson's single to center.
Winston-Salem (30-28, 62-66) got on the scoreboard in the third inning. Tyler Saladino doubled off Anthony Ranaudo to start the inning and scored two batters later on Juan Silverio's base hit to make it 3-1 Red Sox.
That score held until the seventh, when Nick Ciolli hit a solo home run to get the Dash to within one. Will Latimer, however, did not yield a run over the last two innings to preserve the tight victory for Salem. Winston put a man at second base with one out in the ninth, but Latimer set down Kyle Colligan and Ciolli in order to pick up his eighth save.
Ranaudo (5-5) was the victor, allowing one run on three hits over five innings while Bayne (11-7) lost his third straight start after giving up three runs in five innings.
The Dash have lost ten of their last 13 games and are now guaranteed to go four consecutive series without a series victory.
Winston-Salem starts its quest for a series split on Wednesday night when lefties Joe Serafin (4-10, 5.80) and Manny Rivera (0-1, 7.88) square off. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with the audio broadcast beginning at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for their final home stand of the 2011 regular season on Friday, August 26. Winston-Salem will host Myrtle Beach in a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. Fans may purchase tickets for every game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or by visiting www.wsdash.com .
