Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes won a close one tonight, shading the Kansas City T-Bones 5-4 in the middle game of a three-game set before a crowd of 6,692 at Canwest Park. Despite the win, the Goldeyes fell to second, a half game behind Gary, who took both ends of a double-header from Schaumburg.

Kansas City opened the scoring off Mark Michael in the first. After hitting the first pitch he saw for a double, Aharon Eggleston went to third when Michael booted a sacrifice bunt by Damian Rolls. Greg Jacobs flew out to left for the first out before Craig Hurba hit a fly ball to centre. Cory Patton charged and looked to have it caught, but stopped short as the ball fell in. Eggleston scored and Rolls went to second, from where he scored on a Jim Fasano single.

Winnipeg responded in the second off Derek Duclos. With Brent Metheny and Dee Brown aboard on walks, Cody Ehlers homered to right to make it 3-2. It became 5-2 in the third when, with Juan Diaz on second thanks to a lead-off double, Kevin West hit an absolute bomb to centre for his fourth home run of the series and team-leading 14th on the season. That hit would prove huge, as it would not only be the eventual game-winner, but also be Winnipeg's final hit of the night.

The visitors got one back in the fourth when Ryan Fox led off with his league-leading 18th home run and added another in the fifth to make it 5-4 when Eggleston doubled and scored on a Rolls single. But the Goldeyes bullpen tossed three innings of shutout ball to preserve the win.

Michael (1-2) got his first win after allowing all four runs (three earned) on eight hits in six innings, walking two and fanning five. Duclos took the loss in his 2009 debut, allowing all five runs on five hits in six innings, fanning one while walking five. Jordan Stewart tossed a shutout ninth for his first save.

This series continues Thursday at 6 p.m. Andrew Cruse is up for us while Dustin Bolton replies for them. Great seats starting at just $5 are available at all Ticketmaster locations, including the ballpark box office, by calling 780-3333 or visiting ticketmaster.ca.
