
JackHammers Fall to RedHawks

FARGO, ND-The Joliet JackHammers (23-27) launched a three-run 9th inning comeback that fell just short in a 7-6 loss to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (30-26) before 4,712 fans at Newman Outdoor Field on Wednesday night. Joliet lost 10-9 to Fargo-Moorhead in game one of the series on Tuesday night after another three-run 9th inning got the JackHammers within one run.
Joliet took the early lead with two runs in the 1st inning against Fargo-Moorhead RHP Gary Bakker (4-3). C Phil Avlas (3-5) led off the game with a double and scored on a single by 2B Wally Backman, Jr. (1-5) He stole second base and moved to third base on a wild pitch by Bakker.
SS Kevin Rios (2-3) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Backman, Jr. The JackHammers took an early 2-0 lead.
Fargo-Moorhead jumped on Joliet RHP Jason Richardson (2-8) for three runs in the 1st inning. RF Mike Coles (2-4) singled and went to second base on a walk issued to SS Zach Penprase (1-4).
CF Nic Jackson (2-5) hit an RBI double to score Coles and push Penprase to third base. A RBI groundout by 3B Jeremiah Piepkorn (1-3) scored Penprase and tied the score at 2-2.
1B Randall Simon (3-4) followed with an RBI single to plate Jackson and give the RedHawks their first lead of the game at 3-2.
Fargo-Moorhead tacked on two runs in the 2nd inning. Coles reached base after getting hit by a pitch. Penprase followed with a single and Jackson smacked an RBI single to score Coles from third base and give the RedHawks a 4-2 lead.
Piepkorn lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Penprase for a 5-2 lead.
Richardson left the game after just two innings, having allowed five runs on six hits. RHP Jason Novak entered the game and gave the JackHammers three innings.
After Fargo-Moorhead scored two runs in the 4th inning to increase their lead to 7-2, Joliet scored a run in the 5th inning to get within four runs at 7-3. SS Kevin Rios (2-3), who hit a 4th inning single to extend his season-high hitting streak to 21 games, led off the 5th inning with a walk. LF Brad Correll (2-5) popped out and DH Kyle Nichols (2-4) grounded out to move Rios to second base.
He scored on a single by 1B Freddie Thon to make it 7-3.
The JackHammers scored three runs in the 9th inning to fall just short of a come-from-behind win. Rios led off the inning with a single and scored on a two-run home run by LF Correll. Nichols continued the inning with a single. PR Rob Dahlberg (0-0) entered the game for Nichols and went to second base on a single by Thon.
After 3B Andrew Pinckney (0-5) struck out, RF Tim Alberts (2-4) hit a bloop single just past the glove of RedHawks SS Zach Penprase to plate Dahlberg to bring the JackHammers within one run at 7-6.
CF Adam Klein (0-4) popped out and then Avlas hit a ground ball to Penprase, who threw to second base to retire Alberts for the final out of the game.
Joliet continues its three-game series in Fargo-Moorhead on Thursday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. The JackHammers send RHP Derek Barrows (2-0, 3.32) to the mound against LHP Scott Fogelson (2-2, 4.00) for the RedHawks.
