Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release

FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks held onto a one-run ninth-inning lead for the second time in as many games to edge the Joliet JackHammers 7-6 Wednesday night in front of 4,712 fans at Newman Outdoor Field.

JackHammers C Phil Avlas cracked a ground rule leadoff double and 2B Wally Backman Jr. singled him home to open the scoring in the first-inning. Backman Jr. swiped second, reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly by SS Kevin Rios to cap the JackHammers two-run first.

In the second, RedHawks RF Mike Coles singled, SS Zach Penprase worked a walk and CF Nic Jackson and 1B Randall Simon each hit RBI singles to put the RedHawks on the board 3-2. JackHammers starter RHP Jason Richardson plunked Coles, gave up a pair of singles and the RedHawks staked a 5-2 lead.

The RedHawks benefited from a booted ball and a hit batsman before JackHammers reliever RHP Jason Novak walked the bases loaded. RedHawks LF Justin Justice lifted a sac fly to the opposite field and 2B Carlo Cota clubbed an RBI single to make it 7-2. The JackHammers plated three-runs in their last at bats, thanks in part to LF Brad Correll's two-run big fly, but the RedHawks held on for the 7-6 win.

RedHawks starter RHP Garry Bakker (4-3) earns his fourth win of the season and JackHammers starter RHP Jason Richardson (2-8) suffers his eighth loss of the season. RedHawks reliever T.J. Stanton earns his fifth save of the season.

The RedHawks go for the sweep tomorrow at Newman Outdoor Field. Game-time is 12:30 p.m. LHP Scott Fogelson (2-2, 4.00) will get the ball for the RedHawks and RHP Derek Barrows (2-0, 3.32) will head to the hill for the JackHammers.
