Goldeyes Sweep Series at U.S. Steel Yard

GARY, IN - Eight was the magic number for the Winnipeg Goldeyes (42-29) on Sunday afternoon.
Trailing the Gary SouthShore RailCats (37-36) 1-0 in the top of the eighth, the Goldeyes countered with four runs to take a 4-1 lead they never surrendered, securing their eighth consecutive win and their first four-game series sweep at U. S. Steel Yard in franchise history.
"It was nice to put up a crooked number in the eighth and just battle," Goldeyes hitting coach Tom Vaeth said after the game. "It was a really good series, and a well-timed win."
Pitching dominated the first few innings. Winnipeg starter Edwin Carl set down the first eight batters to face him, and Gary SouthShore starter Charle Rosario struck out six Goldeyes before Willie Cabrera put up the first hit of the game with a two-out single in the top fifth.
Carl set the side down in order in the home half of the inning, but the RailCats made it on the board in the sixth. Rookie Reggie Wilson tripled and then scored on an error charged to Maikol Gonzalez to give Gary SouthShore a 1-0 lead.
But the Goldeyes turned the tables in the eighth. Reggie Abercrombie and Josh Romanski started the inning with a pair of singles. Jacob Rogers walked, and after Casio Grider flew out to left field, Wes Darrell singled to drive Abercrombie home and tie the game.
Carlton Tanabe then singled on his first at-bat of the game, Gonzalez walked in a run with the bases loaded, and Adam Heisler hit an RBI fielder's choice to put the Goldeyes up 4-1.
Carl (7-5, 4.44) gave up one run on only two hits through seven complete innings for the win. Cameron McVey pitched a scoreless eighth, and Eric Eadington picked up his sixth save of the season after striking out two and giving up one hit in the bottom ninth.
The Goldeyes scored three runs against RailCats reliever Moises Melendez (3-1, 3.97), who suffered his first loss of the season. Rosario gave up two hits in five innings and walked six for a no-decision.
"We said last night we were up against a pretty good starter," Vaeth noted. "Rosario was tough today, but Edwin brought his A-game and put up some zeroes for us."
The Goldeyes' last eight-game win streak lasted from Aug. 16 to 23 in 2014. The Fish are now just three wins shy of tying the all-time franchise record of 11 consecutive wins.
The Goldeyes will continue this road trip with the first of three against the Sioux Falls Canaries on Monday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Mikey O'Brien (7-4, 4.71) will take the mound against lefty Kris Regas (4-5, 5.54).
