Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN- The Winnipeg Goldeyes (41-29) outhit the Gary SouthShore RailCats (37-35) by 16 on the way to an 11-2 victory.
Kevin McGovern pitched a complete game for Winnipeg and held the RailCats to a season-low two hits. The lefty gave up two runs with four walks and eight strikeouts. He faced just 32 batters in the 107-pitch outing.
The win was Winnipeg's seventh straight and clinched the series win over the RailCats. Gary SouthShore is now 4-8 against the Goldeyes on the season, including a 1-5 record at the Steel Yard.
The Goldeyes got to RailCats' starter Taylor Black in the first inning. They compiled four hits and a hit by pitch to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
The RailCats answered the early outburst with two runs in the second inning. Anthony Cheky and Jose Gonzalez walked and advanced to second and third with two outs. John Holland delivered a broken-bat base hit to score the runners and bring the RailCats to within one run.
The offense shut down after the second inning. Jose Gonzalez recorded the only other hit of the game in the fourth inning and no runner advanced past first base.
Winnipeg's offense did not have any problem revving back up. Black pitched three scoreless frames before finding trouble in the fifth inning. He loaded the bases with one out and allowed a base hit Willie Cabrera to make the score 4-2. Manager Greg Tagert pull Black after Cabrera's hit and inserted left-hander Shane Davies for his professional debut. The 6'6" southpaw retired the next two batters to get out of the jam without further damage.
Davies struggled in the next inning and allowed two runs to score without recording an out. The bullpen struggles continued for Santiago Rodriguez and Diosdany Castillo who made his RailCats debut.
The RailCats and Goldeyes will face off tomorrow for the series finale and the last regular season matchup between the two clubs. First pitch is at 2:10 PM and coverage begins at 1:45P PM on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
