Wichita Wingnuts News Release
LINCOLN, Neb. - The Wichita Wingnuts allowed a season-low three hits Sunday evening as they knocked off the Lincoln Saltdogs 3-1 at Haymarket Park to claim their eighth straight road series victory.
The Saltdogs (40-32) started the scoring, plating a run in the bottom of the first. Robby Kuzdale started the inning with a single, and worked his way around the bases to eventually score on a Brandon Jacobs ground out.
For the second straight day however, a first inning tally was the only run that Lincoln could muster. Eddie Medina (5-3) found his groove as the game wore on, and did not allow a second hit until the seventh inning. In that frame, the Saltdogs had runners at second and third with two outs, but Medina struck out Kuzdale to end the frame.
The Wingnuts (46-26) could not get much across against Saltdog starter Lindsey Caughel, but tied it up against the Lincoln bullpen in the sixth. T.J. Mittelstaedt led off with a single, stole both second and third, giving him three stolen bases for the game, and then scored on an error to tie the score.
Wichita then grabbed the lead in the eighth, loading the bases with nobody out for Brent Dean. Dean was hit by a Stephen Shackleford (4-3) offering, allowing Harrison Kain to score the go-ahead run.
Chase Johnson came on in the bottom half and allowed the first two to reach, and faced runners on second and third with one out. The righty struck out Rene Leveret, then turned things over to Frankie Reed, who got Jon Smith to fly out to end the frame and keep the lead in tact.
Matt Chavez then got the Wingnuts an insurance run in the ninth, doubling Mittelstaedt in to make it 3-1.
Reed then retired the Saltdogs in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn his 15th save, and give Medina the win for the third straight start.
The Wingnuts continue their 11-game road trip Monday as they open up a three-game set against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Newman Outdoor Field. Right-hander Garrett Gould (0-0, 0.75) will be on the mound for Wichita, while Fargo has yet to announce their starting pitcher for Monday's series opener. First pitch is set for 7:02, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
