Goldeyes Sign Veteran Dowdy
August 13, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the signing of veteran infielder Brett Dowdy.
Dowdy, 28, is in his eighth professional season and has played parts of the last five seasons at the Triple-A level in the San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers organizations.
A native of Bradenton, Fla., Dowdy hit .317 in 18 games this season with Triple-A Tecolotes de Nuevo Laredo (Owls of Nuevo Laredo) of the Mexican League before an injury ended his time with Nuevo Laredo on June 17. He started the season in the Brewers organization, playing three games each with the Triple-A Nashville Sounds and Double-A Huntsville Stars in April and May.
Dowdy has a career 244 games at the Triple-A level on his resume, mostly with the Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League. A career .265 hitter in Triple-A, Dowdy's best season came in 2008 when he hit .280 with the Beavers and added 10 home runs and 35 RBI in 91 games.
In 2007, Dowdy won a Double-A Texas League championship with the San Antonio Missions. In the deciding Game 4, he went three-for-six with a home run and six RBI. He was a single away from hitting for the cycle, as the Missions beat the Springfield Cardinals three-games-to-one. Dowdy hit .379 in San Antonio's championship run, with three home runs and a league-best 11 RBI in seven games.
Over 626 professional games, Dowdy has played every position in the field, except catcher. He pitched two innings for Portland last year, allowing only one hit and no runs. The majority of his games have been played at second base, third base and shortstop. He has a career .962 fielding percentage.
The Los Angles Dodgers drafted Dowdy in the ninth round of the 2003 MLB Draft after his one and only season with the University of Florida Gators. He played in all 58 games for the Gators in 2003, hitting .361 with four home runs and 40 RBI.
Winnipeg now has 22 players on its active roster, evenly split between pitchers and position players.
Dowdy is expected to be in the lineup tonight when the Winnipeg Goldeyes begin a three-game series at Canwest Park against the rival Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Game time is 7 p.m. Great seats are available by visiting any Ticketmaster location or by calling 780-3333.
