Goldeyes Scrap for 13-Inning Win

August 25, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

It took a couple innings longer than expected, but the Winnipeg Goldeyes found a win late into a Tuesday night.

Luis Alen hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the Goldeyes 2-1 extra-inning win over the Rockford RiverHawks.

The win breaks a two-game losing slide for the Fish and means they remain two and a half games back of the Joliet JackHammers for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Northern League.

Rockford got on the board in the fourth inning when Victor Diaz hit a solo home run to centre field.

The game would remain that way until the sixth inning. Luis Alen hit a double, was moved over to third on a Justin Justice bunt and then scored on a Dee Brown ground out.

Winnipeg's best chance to end the game earlier in extra innings came in the 11th inning when Donzell McDonald and Kevin West were stranded at third and second base, respectively.

Goldeyes starting pitcher Stephen Flake went six and two-thirds innings, allowing just a run and striking out eight. Zach Baldwin pitched three innings of relief to get the win. He struck out three.

John Muller took the loss for Rockford.

At four hours and one minute and 13 innings, it's the longest game by time and innings that Winnipeg has played this season.

The Goldeyes and RiverHawks finish this three-game series with the rubber match Wednesday night at Canwest Park. Game time is 6:00 p.m. Great seats are available by visiting any Ticketmaster location or by calling 780-3333.
