Joliet JackHammers News Release
JOLIET, IL - A four run tenth inning propelled the Schaumburg Flyers (35-54) past the Joliet JackHammers (46-43) 10-6 Wednesday night at Silver Cross Field, snapping the JackHammers four game winning streak. Joliet will wrap up the season series with Schaumburg tomorrow night in the finale of the four game series.
Eight hitters came to the plate in the tenth with four scoring against William Jackel (5-4). Dylan Parzyk singled and went to second on a Jeff Brooks sacrifice. Ruddy Yan slapped a base hit into left center with Brandon Newton plating the go ahead run on a single to left field. Kit Pellow knocked in a run on a fielder's choice and Chris Schultz singled for the 10-6 lead.
Cody Evans retired the JackHammers in order in the bottom of the tenth for the 10-6 final, only the JackHammers second loss in nine extra inning games this season.
Joliet played catch up right from the start, allowing four runs in the first. Four consecutive singles by Mario Delgado, Joey Gomes, Ron Bouquin and Parzyk plated the four tallies against Paul Fagan, who earned a no decision for his third straight start.
The JackHammers responded with five runs over the first two frames to take a 5-4 lead. Freddie Thon doubled home two in the first and Chris Colton plated the third run on a sacrifice fly against Aaron Guinn. Kevin Rios gave the 'Hammers their lone lead in the second on a two run single after Joe Billick and Josh Flores singled and walked to start the inning.
Schaumburg added solo runs in the fourth and fifth on a Travis Brown sacrifice fly and a Gomes home run to take a 6-5 lead.
Richard Mercado, acquired in a trade last night after the game with Schaumburg, tied the game at six in the bottom of the fifth on a single up the middle against Matt Elliott after Tom Lyons walked the first two hitters.
Both bullpens slammed the door until extra innings with Brian McCullough (4-2) working 3.1 innings allowing one hit with one strikeout to earn the victory.
Erik Hamren tossed 3.2 frames for Joliet, surrendering four hits with three strikeouts after Fagan went the first five allowing six runs on nine hits in his third start for the JackHammers.
Rios led the way with three hits and two runs batted in while Billick collected two hits and Thon drove in a pair.
Joliet will conclude their eight game home stand tomorrow night in the series finale with Schaumburg. A pair of southpaws will take the mound in Alain Quijano (5-7) and Devin Anderson (5-4). First pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
