Buttler and Brooks Homer as 'Hawks Win

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Bookend hitters hit bookend home runs on Wednesday as the Rockford RiverHawks beat the Winnipeg Goldeyes, 9-3, at CanWest Park.

Leadoff hitter Vic Buttler broke a scoreless tie with a two-out, two-run homer in the third inning. No. 9 batter Jono Brooks broke the game open with a three-run homer that capped a four-run ninth inning.

Rockford took two of three from the Goldeyes and went 4-2 on a six-game trip that included a stop at fellow Northern League playoff contender Gary. The RiverHawks moved past Winnipeg into fifth place.

Rockford starter Kyle Wright scattered two runs on six hits over eight innings for the win. Wright (8-3) allowed a RBI double to Donzell McDonald in the bottom of the third inning and got into a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fifth. Wright, who came into the fifth with a 3-1 lead, held the Goldeyes to a run in the fifth, on a RBI groundout by Aharon Eggleston.

Buttler was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a walk. Brooks was 2-for-3 with four RBI and a walk. Buttler knocked out Winnipeg starter Ace Walker with a RBI triple in the eighth inning. Walker (6-5) gave up five runs on five hits in 7 1/3 innings.

The RiverHawks are home at 7:05 p.m. Thursday for Miller Lite/2nd Cousin's Dollar Beer Night, when they play Kansas City.
