Goldeyes Rebound in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (25-24) beat the Sioux Falls Canaries 6-1 at Sioux Falls Stadium on Saturday night.
For a second consecutive start, Goldeyes' right-hander Duke von Schamann (4-4) matched a career-high with eight innings pitched. von Schamann allowed one earned run on seven hits, walked two, and struck out five in the winning effort. von Schamann finished the eight innings on 110 pitches and has now walked two batters or less in all 10 of his starts this season.
"We had a really good blueprint for a victory," said Goldeyes' hitting coach Tom Vaeth . "Get a good starting pitcher and put up zeroes early, and get an early lead to build on. I thought Duke got stronger as the game went along. He gave us the start we needed and helped our offence get going. We got the big hit from Casio. After that, we executed and kind of manufactured some runs with stolen bases. It was nice to see that offence."
The Goldeyes scored in four consecutive innings, beginning with the top of the third. Wes Darvill legged out an infield single leading off and moved to second when Casio Grider beat out a sacrifice bunt attempt at first. Darvill and Grider advanced on Carlton Tanabe's groundball to shortstop. After Maikol Gonzalez walked, Adam Heisler hit a chopper to first base that was mishandled by David Bergin, allowing Darvill to score the game's first run.
With two outs and no one on base in the fourth, Reggie Abercrombie reached first on Bergin's second error of the game. On a 1-2 count, Darvill ripped a single to right to send Abercrombie to third. Grider followed with a three-run home run down the left field line to make it 4-0 in favour of the Goldeyes. It was the third consecutive game in which Grider hit a three-run homer.
Heisler walked with one out in the top of the fifth and stole second base. Two batters later, Josh Romanski doubled into the right field corner with two outs to drive in Heisler with the Goldeyes' fifth run.
Abercrombie led off the top of the sixth with an infield single. Abercrombie stole second, went to third on a groundball to first from Darvill, and scored on a single to left from Grider.
Jake Taylor and Bergin hit back-to-back two out doubles in the bottom of the eighth to account for Sioux Falls' lone run.
Cameron McVey struck out two during a perfect bottom of the ninth inning to close out the game.
"It was a nice ballgame in general," said Vaeth. "Just a good night to feel good about ourselves in the clubhouse. It's a long season. If you bring baggage from the night before, you'll probably be on the wrong side of the score again."
Misael Siverio (3-6) started and took the loss for the Canaries (17-30), allowing six runs, two earned, on eight hits. Siverio walked two and struck out five.
