Wichita Wingnuts News Release

GARY, Ind. - Trailing by a run entering the ninth, the Wichita Wingnuts scratched across a run to tie it, then went on to beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 5-4 in 10 innings to capture their ninth straight win Saturday night at U.S. Steel Yard.

Down 4-3 entering the ninth, Christian Stringer opened the inning by drawing a walk, and moved to third on a Brent Clevlen single. T.J. Mittelstaedt hit a ground ball to short, and raced up the line to beat out a potential game-ending double play to allow Stringer to score the tying run.

With the game now tied, Wichita (31-16) turned to Frankie Reed (4-2) for the bottom of the ninth. The lefty loaded the bases, but escaped trouble when Harrison Kain tracked down a fly ball to left center to send the game into extra frames.

Richard Prigatano reached on a one-out single in the 10th off of Santiago Rodriguez (3-4) to put the go-ahead runner on for the visitors. Prigatano then went all the way to third on a two-base throwing error by Jose Gonzalez who tried to throw behind him at first. Kain then singled to right to plate Prigatano and give the visitors a 5-4 lead.

Reed returned to the hill for the bottom of the 10th and yielded a one-out single, but struck out the side to send the Wingnuts to their ninth straight win, and 10th consecutive series victory.

Wichita scored first for the third straight night, opening the scoring in the third as Martin Medina collected a two-out RBI single.

The visitors added two more in the next frame, as Leo Vargas doubled in a run before scoring himself on an error.

Gary (25-23) pulled within one with single runs in the fourth and fifth before grabbing the lead for themselves in the sixth. A Jarred Mederos ground ball evened the score, and then an RBI single by E.J. Devarie put the RailCats in front by one, a lead they held until the ninth.

The Wingnuts will aim for a sweep of their four-game series with the RailCats Sunday afternoon at U.S. Steel Yard. Right-hander Alex Boshers (4-3, 3.61) will get the starting nod for Wichita, while Gary will counter with fellow righty Karl Triana (3-4, 3.35). First pitch is set for 2:10, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
