
Canaries Beat Goldeyes in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (24-24) lost 18-9 to the Sioux Falls Canaries at Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday night.
With the Canaries trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the second, Cameron Monger led off with a double to left-centre. After Michael Pair walked, Monger stole third base. Goldeyes' starter Edwin Carl struck out Ethan Chapman and retired Blake Schmit on a flyout to right field before Darwin Perez and Jake Taylor each hit back-to-back RBI singles to cut the Goldeyes' lead to 4-2. David Bergin walked to load the bases, setting up an opposite field grand slam homer to right from JC Linares.
The Canaries manufactured five more runs in the bottom of the third to take an 11-4 lead. With first and second and no outs, Chapman brought in Monger with a double to left-centre. Schmit, Taylor, Bergin, and Ozney Guillen added RBI singles.
Winnipeg crawled back within four runs in the top of the fourth. After Willie Cabrera and Jacob Rogers opened the inning with singles, Casio Grider hit a long, three-run home run to left-centre.
With one out in the top of the fifth, Josh Romanski smacked a solo shot to right-centre that cut the Canaries' advantage to 11-8.
Sioux Falls answered back in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run shot to left-centre from Linares. Taylor clubbed a solo homer to left in the bottom of the sixth to make it 14-8.
The Goldeyes scratched out their final run in the top of the eighth on an RBI groundout from Carlton Tanabe that scored Grider. Grider opened the inning with a walk, stole second base, and took third on a line drive to right field from Ridge Hoopii-Haslam .
The Canaries tacked on four runs in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run home run from Bergin, and a pinch-hit two-run shot from Ryan Lashley.
The Goldeyes jumped out to an early 4-0 lead just five batters into the game. After Maikol Gonzalez beat out an infield single to start the contest, Adam Heisler drove an RBI double to centre field. Later in the inning, Cabrera crushed a three-run, opposite field homer to right-centre.
Carl (3-5) took the loss for Winnipeg, allowing nine earned runs on six hits in two-plus innings. Carl walked four and struck out one.
Dylan Badura (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Canaries. Badura took over for starter Shawn Blackwell in the top of the first after Blackwell was struck by a line drive. Blackwell allowed four earned runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. Blackwell walked one with no strikeouts.
Brandon Shimo and Kyle Anderson each worked two and two-thirds innings of long relief. Gonzalez finished with three hits. Romanski, Cabrera, Rogers, and Grider also had multi-hit games.
The four-game series continues Saturday evening at 6:05 p.m. Duke von Schamann (3-4, 4.08) takes on left-hander Misael Siverio (3-5, 6.49).
