Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, IN- The Gary SouthShore RailCats (25-23) brought a 4-3 lead to the 9th inning but allowed the Wichita Wingnuts (31-16) to even the score to force extra innings. The Wingnuts finished the comeback in the 10th inning off of a Harrison Kain RBI single.

The comeback was the third straight for the Wingnuts who extended their winning streak to nine games. Wichita got runs off of the RailCats bullpen, which has struggled all series long. The win clinched the four-game series for the Wingnuts.

The RailCats' defense was their downfall on Friday night. The Cats' committed four errors that led to three Wingnut runs, including the go-ahead score.

The scoring began in the 3rd inning with Wichita capitalizing on a Jeremy Hamilton error. The first baseman couldn't squeeze a line drive that in turn allowed a runner advance and one to reach safely. Then Martin Medina delivered the key hit the Wingnut offense seems to always come up with.

Wichita added a pair of runs in the top of the 4th to build a 3-0 lead. The second run came across via an error by RailCat third baseman Frank Martinez.

The RailCats went to work in the 4th and 5th innings to manufacture runs and cut into the lead. Jose Gonzalez knocked in the first run with a sacrifice fly and Alex Crosby was responsible for the second run courtesy of a base hit.

Gary SouthShore grabbed the lead in the bottom of the 6th. Jarred Mederos pushed one run across on a fielder's choice and EJ Devarie batted in the other with some clutch two-out hitting.

Moises Melendez came on in relief of starter Richard Castillo and threw three scoreless frames. The score remained 4-3 until the top of the 9th. Taylor Black came on and walked the first batter of the inning. Christian Stringer, the runner, moved to third on a base hit and scored on a fielder's choice.

The RailCats loaded the bases in the bottom of the 9th but Hamilton struck out and Gonzalez flew out to center field to end the inning.

Santiago Rodriguez came on in the 10th for the Cats and retired the first batter. Richard Prigatano singled and moved to scoring position on an error by Gonzalez. He scored on Kain's base hit to grab the lead.

Jarred Mederos singled in the bottom half but the rest of the Cats were retired.

The RailCats have lost the last three games after holding leads in the 6th inning or later. Devarie and Gonzalez each had three hits and every RailCat starter had a base hit.

Gary SouthShore tries to avoid a four-game sweep tomorrow afternoon at US Steel Yard. First pitch is at 2:10 and coverage begins at 1:45 on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
