Goldeyes Rally for Exciting Victory

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (37-27) beat the Kansas City T-Bones 5-4 at Shaw Park on Saturday evening.
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Goldeyes rallied for three runs to win in their final at bat for a second straight night. Facing all-star closer Mark Haynes (1-1), Adam Heisler and Willie Cabrera drew back-to-back walks to open the inning. Reggie Abercrombie followed with a line drive single down the left field line that scored Heisler to cut Kansas City's lead to 4-3. After Josh Romanski laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Cabrera and Abercrombie ahead, the T-Bones elected to intentionally walk Casio Grider to load the bases. Haynes struck out Jacob Rogers before Ridge Hoopii-Haslam worked out a seven-pitch walk that forced in Cabrera with the tying run. Carlton Tanabe won the game with a groundball single to centre field on a 1-2 pitch that ushered in Abercrombie. With the win, the Goldeyes have now won seven of their last eight series.
"It's a great feeling, coming into the game and battling after our team's been down (by) three," said Tanabe on the game-winning hit. "It's nice to come back and win off a walk-off, especially. That's the best moment in baseball for me. It's awesome. I can't explain it. This is why we grind every day. This is why we go through slumps--just for these feelings where we can just live for this right here."
Abercrombie put the Goldeyes on the board early with a two-out, two-run home run to left-centre in the bottom of the first inning. The homer included Abercrombie's 1,000th career RBI as a professional.
"Reggie's on fire," added Tanabe. "Nobody's going to stop us when we're hot. We have a scary lineup. I mean, we were down by three against one of the best closers in the league, and we came back and won it. It's amazing."
The T-Bones scratched out an unearned run with two outs against Goldeyes' starter Kevin McGovern in the top of the fourth.
McGovern took a no-decision, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits in seven innings. McGovern walked two and struck out seven, and has struck out 28 batters over his last three starts.
Tyler Moore hit a two-run home run to left in the top of the seventh to give the T-Bones a 3-2 lead. It was Moore's first professional home run.
Sergio Leon added a solo shot in the ninth to make it 4-2 before the Goldeyes' game-winning rally in the bottom of the inning.
Jordan Cooper started for the T-Bones and also took a no-decision. Cooper allowed two earned runs on five hits in eight innings. Cooper walked three and struck out one.
Duke von Schamann (6-5) picked up the win in relief, recording the final two outs in the top of the ninth in what was his first relief appearance of the season.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon with Edwin Carl (5-5, 5.23) facing right-hander Josh Hodges (3-5, 4.89).
