Wichita Wingnuts News Release
LAREDO, Texas - The Wichita Wingnuts evened their three-game weekend set with the Laredo Lemurs Saturday night, dispatching their rivals 7-5 at Uni-Trade Stadium.
After a couple of threats on both sides turned fruitless in the opening innings, Wichita (42-25) opened the scoring in the third, loading the bases with nobody out against Barret Loux (3-2). Brent Clevlen broke the ice with a sacrifice fly, and the visitors added a second on an RBI double by T.J. Mittelstaedt.
The Lemurs (37-31) got the two runs back in the fourth. J.D. Pulfer brought Laredo within a run with a sacrifice fly, and then an error evened the score at two apiece.
Wichita answered in the next half inning to regain the lead. With the bases loaded and two down, Harrison Kain put the Wingnuts back in front with a two-run single.
The Wingnuts did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the evening. Eddie Medina (4-3) turned in his third straight quality start, yielding two runs, one of which was earned, in six innings to win his fourth straight decision.
Wichita added to their lead in the late innings against Laredo's bullpen. RBI doubles by Clevlen and Kain pushed the margin to four in the seventh, and then a solo shot by Clevlen in the ninth made it 7-2.
The Lemurs made things closer than the Wingnuts would have liked in the ninth, as a two-run shot by Ty Morrison and solo homer by Denis Phipps brought the home team within two. Laredo put the tying runs on with two down, but Frankie Reed slammed the door, striking out J.D. Pulfer to end the game.
The Wingnuts and Lemurs wrap-up their three-game set Sunday night at Uni-Trade Stadium. Righty Alex Boshers (7-3, 3.18) will get the starting nod for Wichita, while Laredo has yet to announce Sunday's starter. First pitch is set for 7:05, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
