Goldeyes Lose Long, Activate Metheny

July 1, 2009 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Goldeyes enjoyed their biggest win of the year last night. They also suffered their greatest loss.

Up 11-0 over Schaumburg en route to a 16-4 win, the Goldeyes were in the field in the top of the third with one out and one on. Flyers centre fielder Travis Ezi hit a ground ball to Winnipeg first baseman Cody Ehlers, who stepped on his base for the second out and then fired to shortstop Wes Long to get catcher Richard Mercado at second for the inning-ending double play.

In attempting to break up the double play, Mercado slid hard and took out Long. He was taken to hospital, where x-rays showed a fracture of his left ankle, an injury that will likely keep him sidelined for the rest of the season.

Long has been unquestionably the Northern League's top shortstop this year. Named to play in next week's NL All-Star Game, he is hitting .331 with three home runs and 22 runs batted in. He also earned Rawlings Player of the Month honours for May.

As the Goldeyes placed Long on the Inactive List, they activated infielder Brent Metheny, who has been out of action since June 14 with a calf injury.

Winnipeg wraps up a three-game set with Schaumburg this afternoon with a rare 4:00 start. Come join us in celebrating our country's birthday as the Goldeyes take the field wearing Team Canada jerseys and caps to commemorate that thrilling bronze medal win at the 1999 Pan-Am Games right here in Winnipeg
