Huge Inning in Key Win

Schaumburg Flyers News Release

WINNIPEG - The bats finally arose from their slumber as the Schaumburg Flyers found the big inning they've desperately needed the last week to beat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 9-5 Wednesday at Canwest Park. Trailing 4-2, the Flyers scored seven times with two outs in the top of the eighth inning to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Goldeyes, ending a season-long six-game skid.

Flyers starter Dustin Glant and Goldeyes starter Zach Baldwin were both sharp in the early going, matching each other through the first six innings. A sacrifice fly off of the bat of Richard Mercado put the Flyers up 1-0 in the second, only to have Kevin West answer right back with his ninth home run of the season in the fourth, tying the game 1-1.

Both teams would tally another run in the fifth, with Mercado launching a solo shot to left to put the Flyers in front 2-1. The lead would barely last, however, as Dee Brown extended his league-leading hit streak to 22 games with an RBI single that scored Cody Ehlers.

Glant pitched into the seventh, though back-to-back homers from Brown and Cory Patton would give Winnipeg the 4-2 lead and chase Glant from the game. The long ball once again plagued the Flyers starter, who served up three more home runs to put him in second place in the Northern League in round trips given up.

With a runner on and two outs in the eighth, Schaumburg appeared to be in danger of dropping to their seventh straight. But then the Flyers erupted for three straight singles off of Justin Stewart (1-1), setting up a Victor Ferrante three-run homer to give the Flyers a 7-4 lead. They would add two more runs, with Travis Brown netting two hits in the inning. Schaumburg would match a season-high, scoring seven times in the inning, with all runs coming after two outs.

The fourth solo home run of the afternoon - this time by Cody Ehlers - cut the lead to 9-5 heading into the ninth. Tempers threatened to boil over in the top of the ninth inning, as Vince Harrison's take-out slide of Adam Frost at second rekindled echoes from yesterday's collision that knocked Wes Long out of the game with a broken ankle. Benches emptied onto the field and words were exchanged, but cooler heads prevailed as the game continued to the bottom of the ninth without incident.

Jim Popp (2-1) continued on the mound after coming in for Glant, but was relieved by Cephas Howard after the first two Goldeyes reached base. With the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate, Howard would strike out Kevin West looking to end the game, recording his first save of the season in the process.

The game was witnessed by 6,884 fans at Canwest Park on Canada Day. Schaumburg will get an off day tomorrow before LHP Carmen Pignatiello (3-3, 5.68) takes the bump at home Friday against the Kansas City T-Bones. The Flyers look to get back to .500 with the first pitch scheduled for 6:45.
