Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The league-leading Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped the finale of a three-game set to the Schaumburg Flyers this afternoon, falling 9-5 before a Canada Day crowd of 6,884 at Canwest Park.

Schaumburg opened the scoring off Zach Baldwin in the second. Felix Jose reached on a throwing error by Adam Frost. After singles by Victor Ferrante and Craig Maddox loaded the bases, Jose scored on a sacrifice fly by Richard Mercado. Winnipeg squared it with two out in the fourth off Dustin Glant when Kevin West hit his team-leading ninth home run, a moon shot to dead centre that cleared the batter's eye and travelled an estimated 450 feet. But it didn't stay tied for long.

Mercado led off the fifth with his fourth home run of the year. The hosts, though, came right back in the bottom of the inning. Cody Ehlers doubled to lead it off and scored seconds later on a single by Dee Brown, extending his league-leading hit streak to 22 games. Following a scoreless sixth, the Goldeyes took the lead in the seventh and sent Glant to the showers in the process. Brown led off with his eighth home run of the year, a towering drive to centre, and was followed one batter later by Cory Patton and his sixth home run of the year.

Held to just five hits through seven, the visitors broke it open in the eighth off the Goldeyes bullpen. After singling off Jordan Stewart to start the inning, Travis Brown moved up on a Stephen Yoo sacrifice before Travis Ezi struck out. Jeff Dunbar singled to score Brown and was replaced by pinch-runner T.J. Wilson, who went to third on a Vince Harrison single and that was it for Stewart. Aaron Odom came in and gave up a run-scoring single to Jose before Ferrante cleared the bases with a bomb to left for his team-leading seventh home run. Craig Maddox singled, Mercado walked, both moved up on a passed ball and scored on Brown's second hit of the inning.

Trailing 9-5, the Goldeyes got one back off Jim Popp with two out in the eighth when Ehlers hit his third home run of the year. They threatened in the ninth, putting two men in scoring position with one out and then loading the bases with two out, but Cephas Howard struck West out on a 3-2 count to shut the door for his first save.

Popp (2-1) was the winner, allowing a run on three hits in two innings, walking one and fanning one. Stewart (1-1) took the loss after getting touched for three runs on three hits with one strikeout in one-third of an inning.

This series concluded today. Winnipeg is off to Gary for three games to wind up the first half. From there, everyone gets three days off for the all-star break. Winnipeg returns to action next Friday when Gary arrives for three games. Great seats starting at just $5 are available at all Ticketmaster locations, including the ballpark box office, by calling 780-3333 or visiting ticketmaster.ca.
