Goldeyes Falter Late to RailCats Again
July 7, 2013 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Once again, the Gary SouthShore RailCats took one away from the Winnipeg Goldeyes late in a game.
Gary tied it in the seventh and took the lead in the eighth on their way to a 5-3 comeback win over the Goldeyes on Sunday afternoon.
Each team scored in the first inning. Gary took an early 1-0 lead, but Amos Ramon responded with an RBI single in the home half of the first to square it back up at one a side.
However in the next inning, Danny Pulfer stroked a two-out base hit up the middle to put the RailCats back out on front.
Josh Mazzola gave the Goldeyes the lead in the fourth with a two-run blast over the left field wall. The home run was Mazzola's sixth of the season and second on this eight-game homestand.
Christian Vitters led off Gary's seventh inning with a triple off the centrefield wall. He would score the tying run on a Drew Martinez single two batters later. The RailCats continued to threaten, but Chris Kissock came in to relieve starter Matt Rusch and stranded two inherited base runners to keep the score at 3-3.
The RailCats started the eighth with back-to-back extra base hits, the second a triple by Mike Massaro to give Gary the lead. He would score an insurance run on a Craig Maddox single paving their way to the victory.
Winnipeg would threaten in the ninth. Back-to-back one out hits would put runners on the corners, but Ryan Scoma struck out then Luis Alen flew out to end the baseball game.
Alain Quijano improved to a league-leading 8-2 with the win. He worked seven innings and was charged with three earned runs. Ian Durham worked the ninth inning for his fourth save of the season.
Kissock took the loss in relief. Rusch went 6 1/3 innings in his start, giving up three runs on eight hits. He struck out four RailCat batters.
The two teams meet back at Shaw Park tomorrow night for the third game in this four game series. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. and the Goldeyes will send Pete Gehle to the mound to try and win their first game of the series.
Tickets for all Goldeyes games are available through Ticketmaster by calling 1-855-GOLDEYE, clicking on Ticketmaster.ca or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
