Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Winnipeg, Manitoba - The eighth inning proved to be the difference again between the RailCats and Winnipeg as the RailCats picked up a 5-3 win on Sunday afternoon. Winnipeg falls to 24-23 with the loss, while Gary SouthShore improves to 29-19.

In the deciding inning, working against reliever Chris Kissock, the RailCats got a leadoff double from Adam Klein and Mike Massaro followed him with his league-leading ninth triple of the season to take a 4-3 lead. After Cristian Guerrero grounded out, Craig Maddox rolled a base hit into center to make it 5-3.

Kissock was charged with the loss, his fourth of the season and second against the RailCats. Chris served up a walk-off three-run home run to Zac Mitchell in the RailCats 6-5 win on June 30 at U. S. Steel Yard.

Ian Durham closed the game for the RailCats allowing back-to-back singles with one out in the ninth. Durham then struck out Ryan Scoma and got Luis Alen to fly out to left to end the ball game; earning his fourth save.

Alain Quijano picked up his league-leading eighth victory of the season, allowing three runs on six hits and no walks in seven innings. It was Quijano's seventh quality start of the season.

The RailCats scored first thanks to a leadoff triple by Adam Klein to begin the game. Klein scored on Cristian Guerrero's ground out to make it 1-0.

Winnipeg continued the theme of leadoff hitters hitting for extra bases with Mike Coles doubling to center in his first at-bat. Amos Ramon followed with a base hit to center field to tie the game at one after one inning.

In the top of the second, the RailCats grabbed the lead right back with runners on the corners and two out. Danny Pulfer lined the first pitch he saw from Matthew Rusch into right-center to make it 2-1 RailCats.

After allowing back to back singles to begin the game, Alain Quijano retired the next 10 hitters he faced before Casey Hearther singled to right-center. Josh Mazzola followed with a long two-run homer to left to make it 3-2 Winnipeg after four innings.

Quijano continued his streaky pitching; retiring the next seven after the home run allowed to Mazzola. The run was broken by Casey Hearther in the sixth with a double down the right-field line.

In the seventh, Christian Vitters pounded a triple off the wall in center to leadoff the inning. After Brian Kolb popped out, Drew Martinez rolled a base hit through the middle to tie the game at three.

Zac Mitchell followed with a bunt single to end the day for Goldeyes starter Matthew Rusch.

Rusch went six and a third innings allowed three runs on eight hits and one walk. Chris Kissock relieved Rusch and got Danny Pulfer to fly out to center then picked Drew Martinez off second to end the RailCats threat in the seventh inning.

In the RailCats half of the ninth, they got runners on second and third with one out. Mike Massaro was intentionally walked to load the bases as Winnipeg opted to face Cristian Guerrero with the bases loaded. Guerrero lifted a fly ball to right that was caught by Ray Sadler. Sadler's throw home was in time to get Danny Pulfer, though there was some question as to whether catcher Jordan Guida applied the tag to Pulfer.

Christian Vitters went 3-for-4 with a triple and a pair of runs scored. Klein and Massaro each had two hits.

The RailCats continue their series with Winnipeg Monday night at Shaw Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The radio broadcast will begin at 6:50 p.m. on 89.1 FM The Lakeshore.

One lucky fan will have a chance to take three swings to hit a home run and if that lucky fan does hit it out of the park with a home run they'll win $10,000 in the RailCats July JACK-pot. For more information on July JACK-pot, call 219 882-2255.
