Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

WINNIPEG, MB - Sioux Falls Canaries (46-43) right fielder Aaron Whitefield had three RBIs including a two-out two-run triple in the sixth inning as they defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes (38-51) 6-5 on Tuesday night at Shaw Park. Whitefield who was just acquired from the Kansas City Monarchs has eight RBIs this season in the American Association - all against Winnipeg. The Canaries have won the first two games of this series.

The visitors got on the board in the second on an RBI single by right fielder Hunter Clanin, and a sacrifice fly by Whitefield. The Canaries added two runs in the fourth. Second baseman Trevor Achenbach (11) led off with a homer to left while two batters later catcher Shamoy Christopher delivered an RBI single.

Winnipeg began to come back in the fourth scoring twice. Designated hitter Max Murphy led off with a walk, left fielder Miles Simington followed immediately with a double. First baseman Hidekel Gonzalez grounded to third which scored Murphy. Canaries starter Neil Lang then walked three straight two out batters including Goldeyes second baseman Brynn Martinez with the bases loaded and that made it 4-2 Sioux Falls. The Goldeyes then had third baseman Dayson Croes at the plate but right fielder Najee Gaskins got picked off third to end the frame.

The Goldeyes were down 6-3 going to the bottom of the eighth inning and drew to within a run on a two-run two-out double by Croes. He was 4-4 with a double, two RBIs, and a run scored. It was his second four-hit game this year. The first year Goldeye leads the American Association in average at .368 and base hits with 124.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Goldeyes tried mounting a two-out rally on a single by Gonzalez and a walk by catcher Chris Burgess but Gaskins struck out to end the game.

Lang got a no-decision as he went four innings (plus), struck out one, and allowed three runs (all earned). Cole LaLonde (1-0) worked two shutout innings for his first professional win. Jose Cruz (2) was scoreless in 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen and notched the save.

Goldeyes starter Tyler Jandron (2-7) in defeat went 5 1/3 innings and gave up five runs (all earned). He gave up seven hits, walked three, and fanned five.

The third game of this series is Wednesday at Shaw Park. Right-hander Chris Hardin (2-6) is the scheduled starter for Sioux Falls while righty Landen Bourassa (9-5) is slated to get the ball for Winnipeg.

With the loss, it's the first losing full-season for Winnipeg since 2018 when they were 41-59. The club was 29-31 in 2020 but that was abbreviated due to the pandemic.

Croes now has two four-hit games this year. It was the fourth time this season a Goldeye had four hits in one contest - Javeyan Williams and Burgess are the others.

Winnipeg drops to 10-16 in one-run games. Sioux Falls leads the season series 5-3.

Every Goldeye in the starting lineup reached base safely.

Murphy had one RBI - a fifth inning single. His 82 RBIs lead the American Association.
