Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Over the course of a 100-game baseball season, there are nights you just want to forget. For the Winnipeg Goldeyes, Thursday night was one of them.
The Goldeyes built a 4-0 lead in the first inning and led 7-3 in the fifth when it all fell apart and the Fish were drilled 17-7 by the visiting Sioux Falls Pheasants. As 5,102 spectators looked on, the Pheasants pounded out 17 hits - 10 of them from the sixth inning on - as Sioux Falls improved to 26-32 on the season.
With one out in the top of the sixth and the Goldeyes ahead 7-3, Winnipeg manager Rick Forney replaced starter Luis Villarreal with Chad Benefield and from that point on the Goldeyes fell apart in every aspect of the game. Sioux Falls scored five in the sixth, one in the seventh, one the eighth and seven in the ninth to win Game 1 of a four-game series at Shaw Park.
With the loss, the Goldeyes fell to 35-22 on the season and are now only two games ahead of St. Paul in the race for first in the American Association's North Division. On the upside, the Goldeyes are still 20-8 in their last 28 games.
The Goldeyes started quickly in the first as Price Kendall was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Brian Myrow. Myrow scored on a double by Jon Weber and Weber scored on a two-run homer by Justin Bass. It was his team-leading 11th homer of the year.
With a 4-3 lead in the fourth, the Fish scratched out a run as Bass was safe on an error, went to third on a single by Lou Ott and scored on a fielder's choice ground out by Brian Joynt. The Goldeyes made it 7-3 in the fifth as Weber tripled and Bass was hit by a pitch and then both runners scored on a single by Lou Ott.
But then everything just went south in the sixth and the Fish had their five-game winning streak halted in a cascade of late-inning runs.
There were some offensive bright spots for the Goldeyes who did have 12 hits: Myrow had three doubles, scored a run and drove one in; Jon Weber had a double and a triple, scored two and drove in one; and Lou Ott had a pair of singles and a walk and two RBI.
Benefield (1-1, 3.51 ERA), took the loss for the Goldeyes. Former Goldeyes pitcher Barry Fowler (4-2, 5.26 ERA) got the win for Sioux Falls.
Game 2 of this four-game series goes Friday night at Shaw Park at 7 p.m. and can be heard live with Paul Edmonds, on Sports Radio 1290 or it can be seen live on Shaw TV with Scott Taylor and Jim Toth.
