Goldeyes Drop Series Finale in Extras

The Goldeyes only committed one error in Sunday's series finale, but it helped the visiting Sioux City Explorers bring the winning run across the plate.
With the game tied at 2 in the top eleventh, Tim Colwell drew a leadoff walk. He advanced to second on an error charged to Goldeyes shortstop Maikol Gonzalez and scored on a Tommy Mendonca single to centre field.
Rob Wort sent the Goldeyes down in order in the bottom eleventh to earn his fifth win of the season, and the Explorers took the game 3-2 and the series 2-1.
The loss puts the Goldeyes 3.5 games behind the St. Paul Saints in the American Association North Division and only two games ahead of the Laredo Lemurs in the wild card race, pending the results of games in progress.
The Goldeyes jumped out ahead early, scoring runs in the second and third innings. Josh Romanski led off with a walk, advanced to second on a balk and scored when David Rohm singled to right field. In the third, Casio Grider hit a one-out solo home run to give the Goldeyes a 2-0 lead they held until the top seventh.
Sioux City made it on the board when Mendonca walked, stole second and scored on an RBI single. Neither team scored in the eighth, but the Explorers tied the game at 2 when Mendonca led off the ninth with a solo shot. Both sides went down in order in the tenth, and Mendonca won it in the next inning.
Goldeyes reliever Brandon Shimo (2-1, 3.80) suffered his first loss of the season. He pitched the scoreless top tenth but was charged with the winning run.
Winnipeg starter Mikey O'Brien (10-4, 4.60) gave up only one hit and was charged with one earned run through 6 1/3 innings of work. He struck out seven and walked three for a no-decision. Sioux City starter Bryan Escanio (5-3, 5.32) also took a no-decision after giving up two runs on five hits in the first six innings.
Prior to the game, the Goldeyes placed right-handed pitcher Rob Tasin on the inactive list.
Winnipeg opens a three-game series against the St. Paul Saints at CHS Field on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Right-hander Duke von Schamann (8-6, 4.43) is set to face lefty Kramer Sneed (0-0, 3.86). The Goldeyes will return home on Friday for the first of four against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.
