Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Jared Messer notched a quality start and the Kansas City T-Bones (40-52) beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats (49-44) 5-1 in front of 3,521 fans at US Steel Yard.
The RailCats' loss ended a four game winning streak and was only the team's second loss in the last 12 contests. Gary SouthShore remains in first place in the division at the time of this article, but the Lincoln Saltdogs are .5 games back and play on Sunday night.
The RailCats grabbed the early lead and things looked good at the start of the game. Alex Crosby started the second inning with a base hit and moved to second on a passed ball. A Jaime Del Valle ground ball got Crosby to third base with one out. EJ Devarie delivered in the next at bat with an RBI single that made it 1-0.
Aryton Costa was solid in his second start for the RailCats. The rookie pitched four scoreless innings before the T-Bones struck in the fifth. Ryan Retz led off with a solo home run over the left field fence to tie the game.
Costa did not factor in the decision as Greg Tagert went to his bullpen after the fifth. Costa gave up one run on four hits and struck out three batters.
The bullpen struggled for Gary SouthShore. Carlos Pinales was inserted in the sixth to pitch for the first time after being re-signed yesterday. He surrendered two runs on three hits in his one inning. Anthony Gallas had the big hit for Kansas City, a triple to deep center field. Pinales was charged with the loss.
Lars Liguori handled the final three innings for the RailCats. The lefty gave up two runs on seven hits and struck out one batter.
The RailCats rarely threatened to score in the game. Their best opportunity came in the fifth when the loaded the bases with two outs. Messer got Tony Cheky to groundout to end the threat. The RailCats managed just one hit in the final three frames.
