Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kans. - The Wichita Wingnuts fell in the middle game of their three-game weekend series with the Texas AirHogs by a final score of 4-2 Saturday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The AirHogs (33-58) opened the scoring in the first inning. Cory Morales reached on a dropped their strike with one out, eventually scoring on an RBI single by Devon Rodriguez.
Wichita answered in the second as T.J. Mittelstaedt and Harrison Kain each doubled to even the score at one apiece.
Texas then took advantage of an error by Tim Brown (8-4) to regain the lead in the fourth. With two down, Kenny Peoples-Walls put the visitors back in front with a triple, then scored one batter later on a Brian Bistagne single.
The Wingnuts pulled within one in the fifth, as Leo Vargas opened the frame with an infield single, eventually scoring on a Zack Cox RBI bounce out.
The score remained the same until the ninth, when a two-out RBI double by Rodriguez put Texas up by two.
Griffin Russell (3-9) kept the Wichita offense in check for most of the night, yielding two runs on six hits in six innings. The best chance for the Wingnuts to score against the Texas bullpen came in the seventh, as the inning began with back-to-back singles. However, a double play helped snuff out that threat, and the AirHogs kept the Wingnuts in check over the last couple of innings to even the set at a game apiece.
The Wingnuts and AirHogs wrap-up their three-game set and 2016 season series Sunday afternoon at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Right-hander Alex Boshers (11-3, 3.32) will be on the hill for Wichita, while Texas will counter with southpaw David Russo (3-5, 3.70). First pitch is set for 1:05, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
