Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, IN- The Gary SouthShore RailCats (49-43) scored 12 runs in the last five innings to extend their winning streak to four games with a 12-5 victory over the Kansas City T-Bones (39-52). The RailCats have won 10 of their last 11 contests and clinched their fourth straight series win.

Gary SouthShore broke the game open with a seven-run fifth inning and guaranteed the win with a five-run eighth. The pitching staff was solid and kept the KC bats in check for a majority of the contest.

Travis McGee earned the win after throwing 5.2 innings and giving up five runs on seven hits. He walked to batters compared to seven strikeouts. Jorge de Leon recorded a four out save, his fifth in his last six appearances.

Kansas City started the game hot. Dalton Wheat singled in the second at bat of the game and Brett Wiley followed with another base hit. After a strikeout, Anthony Gallas walked to load the bases. Starlin Rodriguez delivered for Kansas City with a bases-clearing double down the left field line to make it 3-0.

The RailCats managed just one hit in the first four innings before finding their stride in the fifth. Gary SouthShore scored a season-high seven runs on five hits and two walks. Chase Harris hit a crucial bases-loaded single to put two runs on the board. Frank Martinez followed with a peculiar inside the park home run. He hit a line drive that bounced fair before heading to the RailCats' bullpen. Wheat, the right fielder, put his hands up to signal that the ball was unplayable, but no umpires called the play dead. Martinez kept running and scored to make it a three-run homer. The game was 7-3 after the inning.

The T-Bones got two runs back in the top of the sixth. Ryan Retz came up with a two-out and bases loaded single that scored a couple of runs. The hit ended McGee's outing.

The RailCats poured it on in the eighth. They totaled six hits and five runs in the frame. Harris had a double and Tony Cheky notched a pinch-hit RBI.

Moises Melendez and Santiago Rodriguez each did their job in relief for manager Greg Tagert's pitching staff. Four RailCats had multi-hit games and Harris and Martinez each tallied four RBIs. Every RailCat reached base and all but one recorded a hit.

The seven-run outburst in the fifth inning was the highest run total in one inning on the season for Gary SouthShore. Martinez' inside the park home run was the first on the RailCats' season. The game took three hours and six minutes to complete and was played in front of 5,075 fans, the second-highest total of the season.

The RailCats remain .5 games ahead of the Lincoln Saltdogs in the American Association's Central Division. Sioux City fell to 1.5 games back after their loss. There are eight games left in the regular season for Gary SouthShore.

The RailCats go for the sweep of the T-Bones tomorrow night with first pitch at 2:10 PM. Coverage begins at 1:45 PM on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
