Wingnuts Game Recap: Wingnuts Whitewash AirHogs in Matinee

August 28, 2016 - American Association (AA)
Wichita Wingnuts News Release

The Wichita Wingnuts set season-highs in runs (16) and hits (23) and claimed their third shutout of the season with a 16-0 series-clinching victory over the Texas AirHogs Sunday afternoon at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

The Wingnuts (56-36) opened the scoring in the second, as Matt Chavez started a huge game at the plate with a solo home run on the first pitch he saw from David Russo (3-6). Wichita added a second run later in the frame on an RBI single by Brent Dean.

Chavez was at it again in the third and fifth, picking up an RBI single and an RBI double in those two frames to push the advantage to four.

The four runs were more than Alex Boshers (12-3) needed, as he was dominant again for Wichita, scattering four hits over seven shutout innings to earn his 12th win, which ties him for the league lead. The righty has 11 quality starts in 15 outings since moving to the rotation, and the Wingnuts are 13-2 when he starts on the hill.

Wichita put the game out of reach against the Texas (33-59) bullpen in the later innings. The Wingnuts plated six in the sixth, with Zack Cox bringing home the first two runs with the first of his three doubles.

Brent Clevlen added a sacrifice fly, T.J. Mittelstaedt had an RBI single, and Chavez then capped the inning with a two-run shot for his second long ball of the day, giving him his second and the club's third multi-homer game of the year. The first baseman also drove in five for the afternoon, tied for the most by a Wingnut in a game this season.

The Wingnuts plated four more in the seventh, as Cox and Mittelstaedt each added another RBI, and Nick Van Stratten drove in two with a double.

Wichita capped their offensive outburst in the eighth when Cox added his fourth RBI of the afternoon on a double, and Clevlen singled in the Wingnuts season-high 16th run of the day.

Behind Boshers, the duo of Luis Pardo and Gage Smith each worked a scoreless frame to put a lid on the Wingnuts third shutout of the season, and second in the month of August.

The Wingnuts continue their final homestand of the regular season Monday night as they open-up a four-game series against the Joplin Blasters at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Right-hander Jesse Pratt (5-2, 3.28) will be on the mound for Wichita, while Joplin has yet to announce Monday's starter. First pitch is set for 7:05, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
