Goldeyes Comeback, Only to Lose Late
July 22, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes led 5-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning at CHS Field on Wednesday afternoon. Too bad the St. Paul Saints were, once again, just too much for Winnipeg.
The Saints scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth off Goldeyes relievers Brendan Lafferty and Jailen Peguero, as the Saints came from behind to beat Winnipeg 6-5.
It was a devastating loss for the Fish who had come back from a 4-0 deficit after two innings to take a 5-4 lead on a three-run homer by Casey Haerther in the fifth. But the bullpen couldn't hold the lead and Winnipeg not only lost its third straight to St. Paul, it also lost the series 3-1.
With the defeat, the Goldeyes fell to 24-33 on the season and are quickly falling out of the Wild Card race.
Goldeyes starter Coby Cowgill got off to a rough start. He walked the first two men he faced and gave up two runs in the first inning and gave up another walk in the second as St. Paul added two more runs to take a 4-0 lead. However, Cowgill settled in and put up zeroes for the next three innings and his teammates responded.
Trailing 4-0 heading into the fourth, the Goldeyes tallied their first run of the afternoon when Reggie Abercrombie was safe on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on a single by Nic Jackson.
The Goldeyes took the lead in the top of the fifth when Brad Boyer led off with a single and the Chris Robinson followed with a single of his own. Boyer went to third on a fly out by Luis Alen and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Adam Heisler.
With two out and Robinson still at first, Casio Grider singled and then Haerther hit a three-run homer down the leftfield line to give the Goldeyes a 5-4 advantage.
However, in the eighth, the bottom of the Saints order gave St. Paul its 45th win of the season. With Lafferty on the mound, Joey Paciorek doubled off the right field fence and then Anthony Phillips singled to center to score Paciorek. Ryan Lashley then singled and Jailen Peguero came in to relieve Lafferty. The first batter he faced, Dan Kaczrowski singled home Phillips and St. Paul had all they needed.
The Saints had six runs on only seven hits, although Goldeyes starter Coby Cowgill also gave up six walks in 5 1/3 innings of work. The Goldeyes had five runs on eight hits. Nic Jackson, with a pair of singles, was the only Goldeyes player to have a multi-hit game.
St. Paul reliever Michael Zouzalik (2-0, 1.88) earned the win, while Lafferty (2-3, 4.13 ERA) suffered the loss.
The Goldeyes hopped on the bus right after the game and made a beeline for Kansas City, Kan., where they'll face the T-Bones on Thursday evening. Lefthander Nick Hernandez (7-2, 1.77 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg.
The game can be heard live on The Jewel 100.5 with Steve Schuster at the microphone.
