Goldeyes Come Back to Win Third in a Row

Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Hitters dominated Thursday's game, but solid pitching and timely run support decided Friday's 5-4 Winnipeg Goldeyes victory over the Sioux Falls Canaries.

The Canaries opened the scoring early on with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the second inning and an RBI double in the third. Sioux Falls led 2-0 until the top of the fifth, when the Goldeyes batters finally started to connect.

The Fish put up three runs on four hits in the fifth alone, the first following a Brady Wilson single, which extended the right fielder's hitting streak to 12 games. First baseman Casey Haerther and outfielder Jon Weber both singled later in the inning to drive in Kyle Brandenburg and Wilson, respectively.

The Canaries brought the game within one in the bottom sixth, but the Goldeyes came right back with in the seventh, as Wilson scored on another Weber RBI single - his second of the night and the 300th RBI of his independent career.

Winnipeg and Sioux Falls both added a run in the eighth, but a combined effort from Goldeyes relief pitchers Brendan Lafferty and Jailen Peguero kept the Fish in the lead long enough to take the 5-4 victory.

Goldeyes starter Nick Hernandez (2.25 ERA) claimed the win, while Canaries pitcher Joe Bircher (3.20 ERA) suffered the loss. Goldeyes right-hander Peguero (4.32 ERA) picked up the save.

"Things got a little scary towards the end, but he got that win," Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea said of Hernandez. "It helps out your hitters, too, if you know your starter is going to keep you in the game. We just need to stay hot and earn some wins in a row."

With the win, the Goldeyes improve their season record to 15-18 and take over sole possession of second place in the American Association's North Division, while the Canaries fall to 15-20.

The Goldeyes and Canaries play the final of the three-game series Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. Right-hander Matt Jackson will start for the Goldeyes, while Miguel Pena will pitch for the Canaries. This game and every Goldeyes game is broadcast live on Jewel 100.5 and called by Steve Schuster, beginning with Around the Association at 5 p.m.
