Blasters Rally Late to Drop Wingnuts

Wichita, KS - The Blasters scored four times over the course of the seventh and eighth innings to come from behind and beat the Wingnuts 6-3 Friday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

The victory gives Joplin (20-11) its eighth series win of the season with two games remaining in Wichita. After two scoreless innings to start the night, the Blasters plated a lone run in the third to take the lead. Jesus Solorzano punched a line drive single to right to lead off the inning. Gabe Suarez moved Solorzano to second with a sacrifice bunt. Following the second out, Mitch Glasser lined a base hit to right-center for a 1-0 lead.

Wichita (18-15) finally broke through in the sixth to take its first lead of the series. Jayce Ray and David Espinosa each drew one-out walks. Joash Brodin followed with a single to right for the Wingnuts first run of the inning. After a strikeout of Matt Padgett, Dustin Geiger laced a double into the left field corner to give Wichita a 3-1 cushion.

The Blasters had a quick reply in the top of the seventh. Jesus Solorzano led off the inning with a line drive single to left. Gabe Suarez moved Solorzano into scoring position with his second sac bunt of the game. Oscar Mesa then smoked a triple up the left field that scored Solorzano for a 3-2 deficit. The next batter, Mitch Glasser, drove in the tying run with a squeeze bunt up the first base line that resulted in an out at first.

Joplin seized control of the game in the eighth with two more tallies. One-out, back-to-back triples by Jake Taylor and Steven Tinoco made it 4-3. Tinoco scored to make it 5-3 on a ground out to third by Jesus Solorzano. The Blasters added a single mark in the ninth on a wild pitch for the game's final margin.

Gabe Aguilar (1-0) picked up his first win in a Joplin uniform. The lefty reliever worked two-and-two-thirds and had one strikeout with one walk. Frankie Reed took the loss for Wichita. Reed (0-1) went two-thirds of an inning and allowed one earned run on one hit. Joplin won the game despite walking a season-high nine batters.

The Blasters outhit Wichita 13-to-3. Carlos Ramirez went 3-for-5 with all singles. Oscar Mesa, Jake Taylor, and Jesus Solorzano all had two-hit games. Mesa had a triple with an RBI and two runs scored. Taylor scored once and Solorzano drove in one with two runs. Mitch Glasser racked up two RBIs in the win. For Wichita, Dustin Geiger went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
