Lexington Legends News Release

The Lake County Captains held Lexington's offense for most of the game, and got enough power from Jared Goedart's bat to outpace the homestanding Legends 5-3 at Applebee's Park on Wednesday morning. The game was played in front of a sellout Education Day crowd of 7864, most of whom were school children.

The Captains didn't waste any time getting on the board. Their first two batters reached base on singles against David Qualben, then Matt Whitney came through with an RBI groundout and Nick Weglarz followed with an RBI double to bring the runners home and establish an early 2-0 lead.

The Legends got a run back in the third, as Cesar Quintero hit a two-out homer to dead center, his third of the year. Lexington followed that with three successive innings of wasted opportunities against Captains starter Mike Eisenberg and company. The home team got a runner to third in each of the game's middle innings, but couldn't get the two-out hit to cash in and tie the game. Especially frustrating was the sixth inning, when Drew Holder was thrown out trying to stretch his ground ball down the left-field line into a double. An out later, Ralphie Henriquez and Eric Taylor hit a double and a single, respectively. The hits would certainly have tied the game.

Jared Goedart sealed the deal for the visitors with a pair of home runs late in the game. His first, off Chad Wagler in the seventh, was a two-run job that sailed just left of the out-of-town scoreboard in left-center field. His second home run of the game (and league-leading 13th of the season), flew to the right of the main scoreboard in right-center. Reliever Santo Luis delivered his next pitch over Whitney's head to let him know how he felt about the blast, and both benches were warned after the toss.

The Legends plated a pair of runs in the eighth on Eric Taylor's double to deep center, but it wasn't enough. Cody Bunkelman came on in relief and got the last four batters he faced to earn his first save. Qualben (4-2) would get the loss despite allowing just two runs in five innings, and Eisesnberg (1-3) received the win for his five innings of work, striking out eight and walking five while allowing just one hit.

Lexington will once again try to reverse its fortunes in a 7:05 p.m. start on Thirsty Thursday. Doug Arguello (1-2, 4.80) matches up with Lake County's Carlton Smith (1-2, 5.46). It will be Pageant Night, and a Corn Hole Tournament will precede the game. The first 20 teams arriving before 6:15 are invited to participate.
