June 3, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release
Dusty Gober started for the Calgary Vipers and guided his team to a 3-2 victory over the Orange County Flyers at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Gober (1-0) threw six and a third innings and gave up only one hit and no runs while striking out five. At the plate Calgary scored lone runs in the third, fifth, and seventh to hold off a late Flyers rally with two runs in the eighth. The win improves the Vipers to 7-4 on the Golden Baseball League season and they remain a game and a half back in the North Division.
Closer Claudio Galva (1) recorded his first save of the season in pitching two innings and leaving runners in scoring position in both frames. Reliever Rene Miniel helped get out of a jam in the seventh inning as with two on and one out he retired both batters he faced.
Calgary got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third inning as Jorge Mejia singled, Matt Edgecombe walked, and Julio Ramirez drove in a run with a base hit for a 1-0 lead.
The Vipers doubled their lead to 2-0 in the fifth frame as Guillermo Reyes singled, moved to second base on a wild pitch advanced to third on a Mejia base hit, and scored with a Edgecombe run batted in groundout.
In the seventh inning Calgary made the score 3-0 when Reyes and Edgecombe both walked, and with two outs Ramirez drove in his second run of the game with a base hit.
Orange County closed the gap in the eighth inning with singles from David Harris and Steve Boggs to put runners at the corners followed by a RBI fielder's choice from Jimmy Rohan and a two out RBI base hit from Ben Johnson for a 3-2 score.
In the top of the ninth inning the Flyers got a leadoff double and after a sacrifice bunt had a runner at third base with one out. Galva however struck out a batter with the infield drawn in and then got a ground ball to end the game.
