Flyers starter Jesse Smith pitched effectively in a losing effort, giving up two runs on seven hits in six innings of work. Smith (1-1) struck out four while walking three.

Smith escaped a first-inning long ball, when Vipers first baseman Matt Edgecombe hit was originally ruled a homerun that came back into the field of play off the netting above the 20-foot outfield wall. Flyers manager Paul Abbott successfully argued the call, saying the ball ricocheted off the top of the wall, resulting in the umpires saying Edgecombe should be on second base. Vipers manager came out to argue the overturn, and Edgecombe was awarded third base on a ground rule triple.

The Flyers continue this five-game series in Calgary on Friday as Brett Smith takes the mound for the Flyers against Calgary's Erik Dessau. First pitch is at 6:05pm Pacific, and the game can be heard live online through www.OrangeCountyFlyers.com.
