Hartford Yard Goats News Release
HARTFORD - Mylz Jones had two hits and four runs batted in and Garrett Hampson belted a two-run homer, lifting the Hartford Yard Goats to a 9-7 win over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies Tuesday night, before 6,654, the fifth straight sellout at Dunkin' Donuts Park. Closer Matt Pierpont retired all four batters he faced, to record his league-leading ninth save. 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow collected a single in three at bats, before being removed as part of a double switch by Binghamton manager Luis Rojas.
Hartford (18-13) has won six of its last seven games and 12 of its last 13 at home. The sellout crowd pushed the Goats' attendance to 38,858 for the home stand and 96,828 for the season.
The Yard Goats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning on Hampson's third home run of the season. After Binghamton (14-14) cut the lead in half, Hartford built the advantage to 5-1 in the fourth on an RBI-single by Wes Rogers and a two-run single by Jones off of starter Marcos Molina.
The Ponies, however chased starter Parker French in the fifth inning, batting around and scoring five runs. A two-run triple by Jhoan Urena and an RBI-single by Levi Michael off of reliever Marc Magliaro were key blows in the frame, giving the Mets' affiliate a short lived, 6-5 lead. (Magliaro notched the win with his one inning of relief.)
The Yard Goats came right back in their half of the fifth to take an 8-6 edge, after Binghamton pitchers walked the bases loaded. Brendan Rodgers scored the tying run from third on a wild pitch strike out and Jones followed with his second two-run single in two innings.
Peter Mazeika's tape measure upper deck home run down the right-field line in the seventh inning closed out Binghamton's scoring. Dom Nunez delivered an insurance run for Hartford with an RBI-double in the eighth inning.
Jones had two hits and four RBI to pace Hartford's 11-hit attack. Hampson homered, singled and had two RBI. Brian Mundell added two hits. Urena's three hits and three RBI, and Mazeika's homer and three hits led the Binghamton 13-hit attack.
The deciding game of the series is Wednesday morning at 10:35. LHP Jack Wynkoop will pitch for the Yard Goats against RHP Mickey Jannis for Binghamton. The game will be televised on Vantage Sportsnet, broadcast on AM 1410 WPOP and streamed on newsradio.1410.com and MiLB.com.
