Capital City Go-Go News Release
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Capital City Go-Go (5-4), the NBA G League affiliate of the Washington Wizards, defeated the Greensboro Swarm (3-6), 123-117, at the Entertainment and Sports Arena on Sunday afternoon.
In their second meeting of the weekend, the Go-Go and Swarm exchanged baskets through most of the first quarter. Capital City began an 11-0 run late in the first quarter, extending it to the 9:30 mark of the second quarter as they took a 10-point lead. The Go-Go were able to build off the advantage as they carried a 15-point lead into the break, while holding the Swarm to just 39 percent shooting from the field.
The second half began with a quick 17-6 Greensboro run as they cut the Capital City lead to just 73-69. The Go-Go answered back with a 9-0 run of their own, pushing their lead to 13. With Greensboro nipping at the advantage, Capital City was able to make a final 21-6 run into the midway-point of the fourth quarter, creating an insurmountable 18-point advantage.
The Go-Go reserves were the difference in the game, as they outscored the Swarm reserves 34-17 and had three different players finishing with +16-or-higher rating. Anzejs Pasecniks led the bench effort with 13 points, five rebounds and a +20 rating. Ike Iroegbu also finished with a +20 rating in just 11:43 of game time, while Noah Allen ended with a +16 rating, seven points and six rebounds in the game.
Capital City's starters saw three different players score 20-or-more points, led by Jalen Jones's game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds - his second-consecutive game with a double-double and third overall on the season. Jerian Grant added his second 20-point effort of the year with 24 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Wizards' assignee Admiral Schofield bounced back with a 21-point, six rebound effort. The Go-Go shot 52.9 percent from the field, out-rebounded the Swarm 47-38 and made 15 of their 21 free throws on the night.
Greensboro saw all five starters score in double figures for the second-consecutive game, led by Charlotte two-way player Robert Franks's 24 points. Both Martin twins were assigned to the Swarm for the second-straight game, Caleb finishing with 23 points, six assists and five rebounds, and Cody ending with 18 points and nine rebounds. Jalen McDaniels (17) and Kobi Simmons (18) also scored in double-figures for the Swarm. Greensboro finished the game 7-35 (.200) from three, a season-low in makes and percentage.
GO-GO HEAD COACH RYAN RICHMAN
On what they changed since Friday's game:
"Just protecting the paint. We watched film on all the layups we gave up and the guys were receptive. We had a pretty hard practice for an in-between game schedule [yesterday]. We cleaned it up, so credit to our guy [and] credit to our coaching staff -- they did a good job."
On Admiral Schofield:
"Probably Admiral's best game in a week or so. It's good to see him bounce back. He's a worker. He's been in the gym working. He wants to be better. He wants to play better than he has been and I think he's the first to point that out, which is great. You want players to take accountability for their game. He knows he hasn't been playing well and that's why we love him and we believe in him as a coaching staff with the Go-Go and with the Wizards."
On the fourth quarter:
"I thought we did some good things. We made some free throws down the stretch -- missed a couple -- but made most of them, and then defended. In those late games you just want to force tough twos and you don't want to help off three-point shooters when you're up five, six, seven with 30 to 50 seconds left. You want to take away threes, take away second-chance points and I think we did a good job with that. We do that basically every day in practice, so our guys are pretty tuned into that late game."
GO-GO FORWARD JALEN JONES
On what led to tonight's win:
"We had a great practice yesterday. [The team and coaches] watched film to see the things we could correct. We came out with a lot of energy, better energy than we did [Friday night]. We played better together today and came out with a big victory."
On how much fun it is playing when multiple players have high-scoring games:
"It's really fun. We have a lot of talented guys on this team that are capable of scoring 20-plus points every game. Guys with NBA experience on the roster. We did a great job of sharing the ball tonight. Everybody got touches."
