Clinton LumberKings News Release
Lansing, MI - Lansing right-fielder Brad Glenn went 4-for-4 with three RBI, finishing his day with a game-winning triple that also qualified him for the cycle as the Lugnuts handed the Clinton LumberKings a 9-5 loss at Cooley Law School Stadium.
Glenn singled and scored as part of a three-run first inning, belted a solo home run in the third to extend the lead to 4-0 in the third and reached on a double that shortstop Nick Franklin lost in the sun in the fifth inning. With the score tied 4-4 in the seventh, he lifted a two-run triple off the wall in right that scored both Kevin Nolan and Sean Ochinko to put the Lugnuts ahead, 6-4.
The LumberKings used the longball to stay with the Lugnuts as Mario Martinez launched a three-run homer down the left-field line to tie the game at 4-4 in the sixth inning. After Glenn's triple gave Lansing the lead in the seventh, Vinnie Catricala visited the same spot down the left-field line as Martinez, cutting the deficit to 6-5 in the eighth.
Clinton looked poised for a comeback attempt in the ninth, but those thoughts vanished as right-hander Jorden Merry loaded the bases before serving up a three-run double to A.J. Jimenez. Closer Steve Turnbull worked in a non-save ninth and allowed singles to Matt Cerione and Luis Nunez before striking out Catricala to end the game.
Glenn's cycle was the fifth in Lansing's franchise history, the first since Travis Snyder did it for the 2007 club. Nolan also had a huge day, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Jimenez finished with a team-high four RBI on 2-for-5 hitting.
Martinez finished 1-for-3 with the blast - his ninth of the year - temporarily tying Catricala for the team lead with 49 RBI. That tie would last until Catricala's ninth homer, making him the first LumberKing to reach the 50 RBI plateau. Catricala finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and the RBI. Henry Contreras had the other RBI in a 2-for-3 game.
LumberKings' starter Nolan Gallagher finally avoided a loss for his first time in five starts, yet still gave up four runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings in a no-decision. Left-hander Jose Jimenez (L, 2-4) stranded two inherited runners in the sixth, but gave up the game-winning runs in the seventh.
Lansing lefty Egan Smith allowed a season-high four earned runs on nine hits over 6.0 innings in a no-decision. Right-hander Nestor Molina (W, 6-2) pitched 2.0 innings of one-run baseball.
The LumberKings finish the six-game Michigan trip at 1-5 and fall to 14-15 in the West. Following an off-day tomorrow, they return home to open a three-game series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM, listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
