Atlanta Gladiators News Release

DULUTH, GA - Akim Aliu scored the winner in the shootout, as the Gladiators topped South Carolina 5-4 Sunday afternoon at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

Gwinnett (22-22-7) led 4-2 heading into the third, but South Carolina (28-21-2) rallied late to earn a point. The first tally didn't come until the 15:23 mark when Mark Scherer snuck one past Gwinnett goaltender Edward Pasquale.

Just 1:20 later Pierre-Luc O'Brien tied the score at four on a rebound chance to force overtime.

After a scoreless OT session Pat Galivan and Akim Aliu scored in the shootout to give Gwinnett the 5-4 win.

Gwinnett took four out of a possible six points from the Rays over the weekend, keeping them in the hunt in the Eastern Conference playoff race in the seventh seed, with 51 points in 51 games.

Danick Paquette opened up the scoring for the Glads burying a rebound at the 2:35 mark in the first period. Gwinnett is now 16-4-4 when scoring first.

The Rays responded just 2:09 later, with a tally from Trent Campbell to cut the game at one.

Paquette tacked on another goal at the 12:16 mark with assists to Justin Milo and Kyle Kucharski, his second assist of the night and his first points since joining Gwinnett on February 7th.

Just 19 seconds later forward Andy Brandt scored his 13th of the season. Brandt, who was all alone in the low slot, received a centering pass and beat Shane Owen far side to give the Glads a two-goal lead heading into the second.

The Rays cut the deficit to one when defensemen Patrick Cullity added a tally at the 10:42 mark. It was his second goal of the season and first since October 29th, a span of 47 games.

Tim Miller notched his 20th of the season on the powerplay to answer only 1:07 later, giving the Gladiators a two-goal cushion. With the win Gwinnett is now 16-0-0 when leading after two periods.

Gwinnett is back in action Friday, February 18th in Florida against the Everblades at 7:30 pm.
